Trump Wants to Read Ukraine Call Transcript in Televised Fireside Chat

President Trump, who has repeatedly made clear that his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was “perfect,” says he’s thinking about reciting the transcript verbatim on television, even though Democrats think it’s damning evidence. “At some point, I’m going to sit down, perhaps as a fireside chat on live television, and I will read the transcript of the call because people have to hear it. When you read it, it’s a straight call.”

The New York Daily News wasn’t amused by Trump’s invoking of FDR’s trademark fireside chats, alledging that the call “illustrates exactly why Trump is hurtling toward impeachment. The transcript reveals Trump demanding that Zelensky do him “a favor” by investigating Joe Biden, his son, and Democratic rivals.”

Of course, this statement proves exactly why Trump’s fireside chat is a brilliant idea. Because the transcript clearly shows that’s not the favor Trump asked for. Trump asked for Ukraine’s assistance in an ongoing investigation of foreign interference in the 2016 election. It’s obvious that the liberal media and Democrats believe that most people won’t read the transcript, and thus can imply whatever they want about what was said in the call. That’s why Adam Schiff infamously fabricated quotes from the transcript—because the transcript is so innocuous that he had to fictionalize it to make it sound sinister.

I certainly hope Trump does this.
