The Morning Briefing: Iran Shoots Down American Drone, Ready for War

A series of attacks on oil tankers near the Persian Gulf has ratcheted up tensions between the U.S. and Iran -- and raised fears over the safety of one of Asia’s most vital energy trade routes, where about a fifth of the world’s oil passes through its narrowest at the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks have jolted the shipping industry, with many of operators in the region on high alert. (AP Photo/ISNA, File)

Iran shoots down American drone

A U.S. official has confirmed that Iran shot down an unmanned and unarmed drone over the Straight of Hormuz on Thursday.

In a major provocation, Iran shot down an unarmed and unmanned U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton drone while it was flying in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz Thursday, a U.S. official told ABC News.

“Shooting down the American spy drone had a clear, decisive, firm and accurate message,” Gen. Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said in Farsi. “The message is that the guardians of the borders of Islamic Iran will decisively respond to the violation of any stranger to this land. The only solution for the enemies is to respect the territorial integrity and national interests of Iran.”

“We do not intend to engage in war with any country, but we are completely ready for the war. Today’s incident is a clear sign of this accurate message,” Salami added.

Last week, Iran attempted to shoot down an MQ-9 Reaper that was surveilling the attack on one of two tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Iran denies attacking the tankers. Hmmm…who else would attack the tankers? Cui bono?

More discredited info used to “get” Manafort, Trump campaign

John Solomon at The Hill has a story about how discredited information was used to push Paul Manafort out of the Trump campaign.

The second document, known as the “black cash ledger,” remarkably has escaped the same scrutiny, even though its emergence in Ukraine in the summer of 2016 forced Paul Manafort to resign as Trump’s campaign chairman and eventually face U.S. indictment.

In search warrant affidavits, the FBI portrayed the ledger as one reason it resurrected a criminal case against Manafort that was dropped in 2014 and needed search warrants in 2017 for bank records to prove he worked for the Russian-backed Party of Regions in Ukraine.

“It was not to be considered a document of Manafort. It was not authenticated. And at that time it should not be used in any way to bring accusations against anybody,” said Ukraine’s top anti-corruption prosecutor, Nazar Kholodnytsky, recalling what he told FBI agents.

Democrat on Democrat violence kicks into gear: Target Biden.

I love me some intersectional cannibalism. It was bound to happen at some point so let’s get this party started. Biden worked with segregationists which is bad because segregation is bad but not always bad since there are racially segregated groups popping up all over college campuses without objection from the same crowd. Either it’s all bad or it isn’t. Confusing. Anyway, Biden’s point is that you have to work with people whom you dislike and disagree with in order to get the business of Congress done. Now Joe is right, but I’m not going to defend him because he certainly would not come out and defend any Republican who faced (and does face) such a smear.
