Historical picture of the day:

Exerting every effort to save lives, even at the deadly possibility of a Japanese counter-attack, Navy pilots flying seaplanes, with the consent of their commanding officers, landed in the waters off the enemy base of Palau to pick up downed during the March 29 and 30, 1944, raid on the stronghold. One such the picking up of Aviation Radioman Second Class Selbie Greenberg of Pawtucket, R.I., and U.S. Hutchinson, aviation machinist’s mate of Burbank, Calif. They were rescued by Lieut. (JR) James Alcock, Carville, Mass., in his Curtiss (SOG) bi-plane; only five miles of the Grumman Avenger in which the two enlisted men were flying crashed and Hutchinson give Lt. (JG) Alcock their heartfelt thanks for rescue on May 18, 1944. (AP Photo)
