As Though 1989 Never Happened

I was certain—weren’t we all?—that the fall of the Berlin Wall signaled the end of communism worldwide. Sure, it would endure for a while in places where it had long ago been established, but we wouldn’t see any new countries fall to communist rule, especially not countries with democratic traditions.

Venezuela, however, is truly on the brink of going totalitarian, and not with a revolutionary bang as in Soviet Russia, but slowly and in stages as in Nazi Germany.

My colleague Ron Radosh has the latest gruesome details.

Perhaps I should go there and write about it while I can still get a visa.
