Although Britain voted for the controversial UN Security Council resolution that calls Israeli settlements illegal, Prime Minister Theresa May and her cabinet do not support the Obama administration’s newly declared diplomatic war on the Jewish nation-state.
A spokesman for May said in an official statement that “surprised” the United States: “We do not believe that it is appropriate to attack the composition of the democratically-elected government of an ally.”
The (U.K.) Government believes that negotiations (between Israelis and Palestinians) will only succeed when they are conducted between the two parties, supported by the international community.
In other words, the U.S. shouldn’t confuse Britain’s vote in favor of the resolution with support for an anti-Israel foreign policy. To make sure the White House gets the point, the spokesman went on to explain that peace cannot and will not be established “by focusing on only one issue, in this case, the construction of settlements.”
Hilariously, the White House didn’t see this official statement coming. According to CNBC, a spokesman for the State Department admitted it “surprised” them. Knowing the current State Department and the White House as we all do, that should probably be shocked rather than surprised. They probably thought they could declare war on Israel quickly before Trump takes office. Well, from the looks of it, that’s not quite so.
