For years, a nagging question has puzzled millions of people at the breakfast table. Why aren't cereal bags Ziploc?

It's one of those everyday mysteries that never seemed to have a good answer. You open a fresh box, pour yourself a bowl, and then you're stuck wrestling that crinkly plastic liner shut so the rest doesn't go stale within days. Most of us lose that fight more often than we'd care to admit. And if you have kids, forget about it.

I’ve bought containers and clips solely to keep my cereal fresh, and I know I'm not alone. I'm sure we've all seen the memes wondering why nobody ever thought to put the two together. "

I'd bet most folks would happily pay a little extra for the privilege.

Well, it finally happened. It just took until after Elon Musk gave us a flying car.

General Mills, the company behind Cheerios, has teamed up with Ziploc to tuck a resealable bag inside its cereal boxes. The move answers years of gripes from customers tired of watching their cereal lose its crunch the moment the bag gets opened.

The new packaging is called Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal. Its zipper-style closure stretches only partway across the top of the bag, leaving room for a built-in spout. The idea is to make pouring easier, cut down on spills, and retire the rolled-up bags and cereal clips that have cluttered American pantries for decades.

The demand was hard to miss. According to General Mills, Cheerios and Ziploc field hundreds of thousands of requests, comments, and reactions about cereal packaging every year, and the company pitched the change as a direct response to shoppers who wanted a simpler way to seal the bag.

"Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they've been asking for," Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, said in a statement.

Took them long enough, right? I mean, we got a flying car before this, for crying out loud.

“So why did this take so long?” asked Aakash Gupta, a product growth leader who hosts The Growth Podcast. “Zippers on cereal aren't even new. Malt-O-Meal started putting them on its bagged cereal in 1998, and General Mills already sells Cheerios in resealable bags at Walmart, the big 28 and 32 ounce ones with no box at all.”

Don't go tossing your clips just yet, though.

PantrySeal will launch as an option for original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, and the regular bags aren't going anywhere. The new boxes hit shelves only at Walmart on Oct. 27, 2026, with a nationwide rollout expected in the coming months.

My guess is it won't be long before other brands jump on board, and one day, these bags will be standard, and we’ll laugh at all the time and money we spent on clips and sealing containers. Of course, no amount of clever engineering can solve every breakfast problem.

We just gotta hope the kids will actually close the seal.
