Democrat leaders want us to believe that when a socialist knocks off one of their own in a primary, it’s a fringe outside group exploiting low turnout, and nothing that reflects the actual ideology of the party. In such an important midterm election cycle, the last thing the Democrats need is to be so closely linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their radical agenda, which manages to be even more radical than the Democrat Party’s platform, at least the one they publicly admit to.
I’ve said before that primary wins of DSA candidates over establishment Democrats reflect where the Democrat Party is already headed ideologically. But until the midterm elections are over, Democrats are going to try very hard to publicly distance themselves from the DSA.
What are they trying to hide? Well, it’s obvious. What the establishment doesn’t want the public to understand is that the socialist insurgency isn’t an insurgency at all. It is coming from within the party's own base.
In fact, it’s so obvious that even CNN can see what’s going on.
CNN's chief data analyst, Harry Enten, laid out exactly what’s happening. "I think there's this idea, perhaps in Democratic circles, 'Oh, they're coming in from the outside.' No, no, the call is coming from inside the house. It's your own voters." Enten had the numbers to back him up. He pointed out that 41% of self-identified Democrat voters now identify as democratic socialists, compared with just 20% of independents who lean Democrat. "These are Democratic voters," Enten said. "These are people who voted for Kamala Harris."

The polling confirms this is no longer a fringe phenomenon. A Fox News poll found recently that 52% of Democrats now hold a favorable view of socialism, compared with 43% who view it unfavorably. A majority of Democrat voters, not a rebellious minority, now embrace socialism outright. Gallup polling cited by CNN found the number even higher: 66% of Democrats hold a positive view of socialism. Different pollsters. Different methodologies. Same conclusion.

The socialist wave in the Democrat Party is happening everywhere, not just the bluest cities in the bluest states. Enten pointed to the Wisconsin Democrat primary, where a candidate named Francesca Hong has emerged as the runaway favorite for the nomination. "She's a Democratic socialist," Enten said. "Her chance is up like a rocket ... 96% chance to be the Democratic nominee in Wisconsin, a Democratic socialist, according to the Cash Prediction markets." Enten didn't stop there. "So this is not just happening now in New York, Philadelphia, Denver," he said. "It looks to me like it's going to be happening in a place like Wisconsin, which, of course, is a very purple state."

Enten's analysis is a warning sign for Democrats. It shows how deep this socialist problem really runs, and it makes the party's leftward drift obvious to anyone watching. This creates a real problem heading into the midterms. The same Fox News poll that found a majority of Democrats embracing socialism found the opposite result among the broader electorate: just 17% of all voters view socialism favorably, while 77% view it unfavorably. Voters overwhelmingly reject socialism everywhere outside the Democrat Party's own coalition.
Democrat strategists can keep telling themselves this is a containable outside insurgency confined to a few safe seats. But it’s widespread, and in the end, it’s Democrat Party voters who are pulling the levers for these candidates. They are making the choice. And when the general election season heats up, you can bet the Republicans are going to use this to their advantage.
