Chuck Schumer has a serious problem on his hands, and the numbers don't lie. According to CNN's latest polling data, the Senate Minority Leader has become the least popular Democratic Senate leader since records began in 1985. He's actually underwater with his own party, sitting at minus four points among Democrats nationwide. That's right: Democrats don't even like their own Senate leader.
CNN data analyst Harry Enten didn't hold back one bit when breaking down the grim reality for Schumer. "I think the word of the day is terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible," Enten said. "He's under water with Democrats. His own party, he's underwater. He's at minus four points. That makes him the least popular guy for a Dem Senate leader going all the way back since the mid-1980s at least."
The reason for Schumer's historic unpopularity is painfully clear. Democrats want one thing from their elected leaders: resistance to Trump. Anything viewed even remotely as capitulation will be punished severely. Back in March, Schumer took a political hit for voting to keep the government open. Now he’s paying the price for not keeping his caucus in line. They are treating that as a weakness and as an excuse for new leadership.
As Enten explained, back in 2017 during Trump's first term, 46% of Democrats thought that congressional Democrats weren't doing enough to fight Trump. Now that number has skyrocketed to 69%, a massive 23-point jump. The Democratic base wants blanket resistance. If Trump says the sky is up, if you disagree, you’re finished. And the activist wing of the party clearly doesn't think Schumer fits the bill.

"Democrats, they want a fighter. They want a fighter. That's why," Enten explained. "The super, super duper majority of Democrats believe that the Democrats in Congress are not doing enough to oppose Donald Trump. And that, of course, is a big, big, big, huge criticism of Chuck Schumer. And that is why he is underwater."
Things get even more interesting when you zoom in on Schumer's home state of New York, where he'll face voters again in 2028. While he's above water with New York Democrats, his 16-point net favorable rating looks pathetic compared to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who's crushing him by 30 points among the same demographic. If AOC decides to primary Schumer, the numbers suggest she'd be the favorite to win.
"If she decides to challenge Chuck Schumer come 2028, she's got a real leg up on the competition. I dare say, at this point, she would be the favorite to beat him," Enten noted. He added that such an outcome would blow his mind, considering Schumer is a "New York born and bred type of guy."

For a political veteran like Schumer, who has represented New York in Congress since 1981, facing a credible primary threat from the Democratic Party’s moron-in-chief, Ocasio-Cortez, represents a stunning fall from grace. The numbers make clear that the Democratic Party has abandoned its old guard and thrown its weight behind the loudest voices of the far-left “resistance.”
And Chuck Schumer better be taking that seriously.
