On Friday, portions of Joe Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur leaked, and they’re nothing short of damning. Hur, who led the investigation into Biden’s unlawful possession of thousands of classified documents, conducted the interview as part of the final phase of his probe.
For anyone honest about Biden’s declining mental state, the contents of this leak are no surprise. Even many Democrats who’ve worked closely with him knew the truth. But Hur was relentlessly smeared by the left for documenting what everyone could see with their own eyes. He deserves an apology. Democrats should have treated the Hur report as an opportunity to confront reality. Instead, they completely blew it.
When his report detailed Biden's mental decline in excruciating detail, it was their chance to gracefully usher Biden off the political stage. Instead, they circled the wagons and attacked the messenger.
The recently released audiotapes of Biden's interview with Hur confirm everything the special counsel warned us about. The president couldn't remember basic facts about his son Beau's death, struggled with simple questions, and demonstrated exactly why Hur described him as an "elderly man with a poor memory."
But rather than face reality, Democrats went on the offensive.
When Hur testified before Congress, then-Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) accused Hur of putting gratuitous language in the report to besmirch Biden.
“What is in the rules, Mr. Hur, is, you don't gratuitously do things to prejudice the subject of the investigation when you're declining to prosecute,” he said. “You don't gratuitously add language that you know will be useful in a political campaign. You were not born yesterday. You understood what you were doing. It was a choice. You certainly didn't have to include that language. You could have said, vis-à-vis the documents that were found at the university, the president did not recall.”

“There is nothing more common, you know this, I know this,” Schiff continued. “There is nothing more common with a witness of any age when asked about events that are years old to say I do not recall. Indeed, they're instructed by their attorney to do that if they have any question about it. You understood that, you made a choice. That was a political choice. It was the wrong choice.”

Schiff wasn’t alone, of course. And every single Democrat who attacked him is eating crow. Not just because the audiotapes prove Hur’s assessment was accurate but because Democrats have largely taken the position that if Joe Biden had left the 2024 presidential race earlier, they would have had a fighting chance to win the election.
They had their chance to make a change when it mattered. They could have used Hur's report as the perfect off-ramp to replace Biden with a stronger candidate and maybe even a chance to nominate someone besides Kamala Harris.
Instead, they attacked Hur's credibility and doubled down on a failing strategy.
Now, it likely wouldn’t have mattered. Trump was going to win the election regardless. But maybe they could have held onto the Senate. The important thing here is that Democrats believe that Biden’s failure to leave the race earlier was what doomed them. After the release of Hur's report, they had the opportunity to make a course correction, but they opted for political expediency over the truth.
