If you haven’t happened upon the gem that is “Bob’s Burgers” yet, its 100th episode is a good excuse to get your binge-watching going. Like FOX’s other animated stalwart franchises “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy,” “Bob’s Burgers” is a creative venture that doesn’t particularly welcome the political correctness that plagues television and film now. When I say “doesn’t particularly welcome,” I mean safe spaces and trigger warnings die the hideous deaths they deserve. When the PC Police come for the cartoons, we will know we’ve truly lost freedom of expression.
To commemorate the 100th episode, The Hollywood Reporter interviewed some of the FOX execs responsible for getting the show off the ground, as well as its creator, Loren Bouchard. Bouchard’s original vision for the show was pretty dark (and still seems funny to me):
I originally thought the show should be about a family that runs a restaurant who are cannibals. Very early on, [Fox] said, “Well, do you need the cannibalism?” I had really put it in there because I thought they would want it. I’m coming off of working for Adult Swim, and the darker, more shocking aspect seemed like what you needed in order for an animated idea to cut through the noise.
The good news is that FOX has already demonstrated that it will run an animated series seemingly forever if the public wants it. Let the retirees in Florida watch another “very special episode” of “CSI in Order Chicago Something” where they deal with a teen pregnancy transgender restroom ZOMG GUNS issue.
The fun people will be hanging out with the grown-up cartoons.
