Revenge of the Truck-Loving Guys

I read with interest the article at the Washington Post entitled, “Gas prices sink Obama’s ratings on economy, bring parity to race for White House:”

Gas prices are a main culprit: Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they disapprove of the way the president is handling the situation at the pump, where rising prices have already hit hard. Just 26 percent approve of his work on the issue, his lowest rating in the poll. Most Americans say higher prices are already taking a toll on family finances, and nearly half say they think that prices will continue to rise, and stay high.
The downshift is particularly notable among independents — 57 percent of whom now disapprove — and among white people without college degrees, with disapproval among this group now topping approval by a ratio of more than 2 to 1, at 66 versus 28 percent.

Last year, Obama criticized SUV drivers:

Speaking at a Pennsylvania town hall meeting last week, Obama couldn’t Escape an awkward moment when his questioner responded to his answer that “big guys” who still drive “big SUVs” need to look to alternative fuel vehicles.

“You know, they got their big monster trucks and everything,” Obama said before the audience member at Gamesa Technology Company told him he had one of his own.

“You’re one of them? Well, now, here’s my point. If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting eight miles a gallon … you may have a big family, but it’s probably not that big,” Obama said as the laughter started to rise.

Obama seems glad for the high gas prices, perhaps not just because he believes that SUV’s are bad for the planet or something, but because those “big guys” in SUVs will be punished for going around with their big trucks and all.

I wonder if the independents who disapprove of Obama now are the same truck-loving guys who Obama dissaproved of? It would be ironic to see him lose in November because of his disdain for them a while back.
