You may recall me, in my daily column from Tuesday, pointing out what I called what should be (but, alas, won’t be) a career-ending quote from Gavin Newsom.
Now, before you start in on my going after Gavin Newsom particularly, I’ll say up front that the problem is much, much larger than he is—and that he is not smart enough to be leading this parade. Rather, he is merely a symptom of that larger issue, albeit a ghastly symptom. That larger issue being the left’s misuse of race issues for its own benefit.
I'm not trying to impress you. I'm just trying to impress upon you, I'm like you. I'm no better than you. You know, I'm a 960 SAT guy… You've never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.
I pointed out that Newsom revealed in that slip an uncomfortable truth about how the left thinks of minorities. So along comes Cornel West, with a leather strap in hand to spank him with yesterday.
Brother Newsom could’ve taken a humanistic approach! He could’ve said, “I’m just like you. I was born of a woman. I’ll face loss, pain, and death just like anyone else.” But instead, when he thinks of Black people, he brings up low SAT scores. That mindset sits at the core of white supremacy—the belief that Black people are less beautiful, less moral, less intelligent! Don’t play with us like that @CAgovernor pic.twitter.com/cwRH6wEyKY

In all honesty, I have never thought very much of Cornel West. His constant harangue on “white supremacy” is much too convenient and, as with all such claims, attacks the wrong problem. I never liked his fearful stance on Herman Cain, for example. When even Juan Williams, himself no bastion of conservative thinking, back in 2011 suggested that leftists like West and Tavis Smiley felt threatened by Cain’s success, I started watching West a bit more closely.
I wondered at the time if the bloom would be off the rose for blacks who have seemingly always voted Democrat once the racist BS, like what Gavin Newsom offered up the other day, started coming out from the white leftists—as the threat of black conservatives like Herman Cain in the day, Clarence Thomas, etc., notches up. And there is, I think, a connection there that not many are talking about.
You see, there’s the issue. The white leftists like Newsom want blacks as a permanent underclass and will always see them that way. That line was spoken, by mistake I’m sure, but the linkage between blacks and low SAT scores is firmly and permanently etched into white leftist minds. Every so often, it slips out.
Ignore for the moment, as people like Cornel West and Gavin Newsom tend to do, that the lower scores are at least in part because of low expectations, combined with underperforming government schools, which, by the fiat of government and teachers’ unions, there is no escape from—thus trapping their young charges in a lifetime of poverty they can, in turn, continue to blame conservatives for, further ensuring government power in the hands of the left. (I think we have a working definition for a vicious cycle.)
Hard to believe it’s been 63 years since Martin Luther King Jr. uttered the “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial, in which he publicly and dramatically dreamed of a time when people are “not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
A small group of Westside High School students plastered the school Monday with posters advocating that a student from South Africa receive the "Distinguished African American Student Award" next year.
The students’ actions on Martin Luther King Jr. Day upset several students and have led administrators to discipline four students.
The posters, placed on about 150 doors and lockers, included a picture of the junior student smiling and giving a thumbs up. The posters encouraged votes for him.
The posters were removed by administrators because they were ‘inappropriate and insensitive,’ Westside spokeswoman Peggy Rupprecht said Tuesday. ”
The problem?
The students were suggesting a WHITE African student get the award, and apparently went to some lengths to describe this student’s merits, of which there were many.
Apparently, the Omaha kids making this suggestion were more grown up then the ones running the government school, there. Dare I say they were racist?
Rupprecht said the award always has been given to black students. . . .
Rupprecht said disciplinary action was taken against the students involved but, citing student privacy policies, she declined to specify the penalties or what about the students’ action led to them.
Karen Richards said her son, Trevor, who was pictured on the posters, was suspended for two days for hanging the posters. Two of his friends also were disciplined for hanging the posters. A fourth student, she said, was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday morning in support of the boys. The petition criticized the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award.
Do you see the problem yet?
It is both amazing and annoying how little things have changed in voter perception since then. For all the screaming about “diversity,” the one thing that cannot stand, if you’re a leftist, is diversity of thought. Call the idiot admins “racist,” and they—and a lot of leftists around the country—will be looking at you like you just grew horns. The problem extends itself outside political and educational fields, of course.
In the rush to blame white folks for criminal attacks on people of color, apparently in the hopes of attaining political and social power, we have all but forgotten that the problems of black-on-white and black-on-black crime are much more prevalent.
A historical case comes to mind… Trayvon Martin v. George Zimmerman, an incident which occurred (my gosh…) 14 years ago. It was noted at the time by Jack Cashill at American Thinker (sorry, that linked site is now gone).
They knew that Martin’s savage attack on Zimmerman was hardly out of character. Had they shared this information with the public, they would have helped dispel the widespread illusion about innocence of this seventeen-year-old “child,” a word they and the prosecutors used repeatedly, and helped prepare the nation, black America in particular, for the eventual outcome of the trial. Although not allowed to know it, Edwards had a lot in common with brother Trayvon. He too boasted of his drug use, his affection for violence, his disdain for bitches. He too even took a photo of his hand on a pistol. Though only fifteen, Edwards was on a slightly faster track than Martin. “With my niggas when it’s time to start taken life’s,” he tweeted three days before the shooting. Apparently, he was not kidding.
The way things work out here in the real world is the Democrats always seem to benefit from blacks being “oppressed” because they get to come in and play the hero. Not that the problems ever get truly solved, mind you. The subtle and all-too-often delivered message is minorities can’t make it without the Democrats being in power. Essentially, what we have here is the left using its racism to gain power for themselves under the guise of denouncing racism.
I tell you this…
For every George Floyd, for every Trayvon Martin, etc., etc., I can give you a Walter E. Williams, a Clarence Thomas, a Thomas Sowell, a Ben Carson, a Shelby Steele, a David Webb, a David Dorn, a Herman Cain. The list goes on and on, but you get the idea. How did the successful make it? Simple: they joined the majority culture. These people prove, however inconveniently, that most issues we regard as racial are, in fact, cultural.
The left, as per usual, lionizes the failures like George Floyd and Trayvon Martin and denounces people like the late David Dorn, David Webb, Clarence Thomas, and the rest, saying loudly, along with Joe Biden, that “if you don’t know who to vote for, you ain’t black.”
If that connection doesn’t seem obvious to you, let me help you along: Why did the riots and the burning buildings in our cities stop the moment the Democrats got what they wanted—which is to say, power? Didn’t anyone notice that racial unrest diminished, with BLM drying up and blowing away like a tumbleweed, once the Democrats obtained the White House?
And yet, what of the lives of black Americans changed for the better once the cadaverous Joe Biden was in the White House? Not a blessed thing. In fact, things have gotten worse.
Why have things not changed? Why have the oft-repeated promises been forgotten? Because, as always, the left drops the tool as soon as it has served its purpose. The Democrats have been playing black Americans for fools for years, and a goodly number of them—some of whom are listed above—have long since started to catch on. That’s why the Democrats were complaining about losing black voters in the most recent election…the one bloc of voters they have been taking advantage of for generations.
Will the left ever solve race issues? No.
The fact of the matter is, the left does not want to solve racial issues. The worst thing you can do to a leftist is actually solve a problem, because once you do, they lose their ability to demagogue it. The Democrats have been playing their race cards since the 1960s… and I mean the 1860s. If this quote from Gavin Newsom is an example, the left has never switched sides.
At some point, white leftists are going to have to concede that government—particularly as driven by the left—has its thumb on the scales when it comes to race.
Now, speaking of BLM, it's not totally fair to suggest that ALL blacks didn't advance during those riots. Our Catherine Saldago pointed out last December a case where one benefitted greatly:
The leader of the Oklahoma City chapter of BLM was just charged by the Department of Justice with wire fraud and money laundering.Tashella Sheri Amore Dickerson was executive director of Black Lives Matter OKC (BLMOKC) and, therefore, was able to access its financial accounts on PayPal and Cash App. The DOJ detailed the charges against Dickerson and her organization in a press release on Thursday
Not only did BLMOKC not use the money it received for bail funds for that purpose, but the organization also received substantial charitable donations, despite not being officially registered as a tax-exempt charity organization, per the DOJ. BLMOKC used its affiliation and sponsorship with Arizona-based Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ) to receive charitable donations, despite its non-charity status.
At some point, black voters are going to need to learn the lesson that the Democrats are not their friends—that they have no interest in blacks succeeding, at least without their “help,” which, of course, requires white leftists in power.
Make no mistake, this is an image hotly followed by white liberal suburbanites, whose only real interest is to make the world safe for their Volvos by keeping a fresh supply of “oppressed” minorities at arm’s length.
Whenever that time comes, that will be the point at which the black voter will swing away from the Democrat Party, and the race warlords—both black and white—who have been benefiting from that image.
