WASHINGTON – While many comedians find humor in the political process, actor and comedian Kevin Hart takes a different approach.
“I don’t touch on any political themes when I am doing stand-up comedy because I am not that much of a political person. Within this particular time when you talk about the candidates it’s very hard for me to talk about it because there are things on both sides that aren’t really standard or aren’t really going away. I think there’s a lot of problems in our world today that aren’t being addressed properly, so I choose to not speak on it at all,” Hart said at the screening of his new stand-up comedy film What Now? at Regal Cinemas in D.C.
“I’m a person that loves love and a person that loves to bring people closer together, and if you don’t stand for that it’s very hard to get my support. I don’t believe in segregation. I believe in bringing people closer together. There are people that died to bring the world and people closer together, so until problems are addressed with some of the issues – like lives being taken for no matter – it’s very hard to talk about the election. You need to talk about what’s really going on with the world and then you can talk about that,” he added.
Roughly four months after Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced his presidential run, Hart shared his opinion of the billionaire businessman.
“I will say, for Donald Trump, I think a lot of people like to say they can do things and never do ’em. I take my hat off to Donald Trump for simply trying to put his actions behind the words that he’s been saying for years,” said Hart in October 2015. “He’s always been giving people a hard time [about wanting to run the world] and he wanted to take a swing at it and try and run. He actually put a campaign together to do it. So I applaud him simply for that, for following a dream I guess.”
Trump responded to Hart’s comments on Twitter.
“Thanks Kevin–so nice!” Trump tweeted.
Hart was asked if he feels the same way about Trump’s candidacy less than a month before Election Day.
“Well, I think when those things came out it was just simply about a guy doing something that was a goal, but that was before a guy opened up his mouth and you find out who that person really is. So, I don’t even remember the things that were said because right now they have been taken away by hearing a masquerade of things now, so I can’t talk about a guy that I just have nothing good to say about,” Hart responded.
Hart’s film What Now? consists of his live stand-up comedy performance at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia before a crowd of more than 50,000 fans.
The film opened in theaters on Oct. 14.
