Acid Attack Survivor Slays New York Fashion Week

Just two years ago, Reshma Qureshi was brutally attacked with acid in India. She suffered immensely, losing her left eye. After the attack, with her face deformed, she considered suicide as an option. Unfortunately, Reshma’s situation is not rare. Many girls in India are the victims of acid attacks. With the help of the charity Make Love Not Scars, Reshma was able to overcome her feelings of despair, and has instead begun to inspire other victims like herself.

And an inspiration she is! Just this week, the 19-year-old modeled in two separate events at New York Fashion Week. She opened the show for Indian designer Archana Kochhar and looked as stunning as ever in a long, white dress with colorful panels. She also walked for Vaishali Couture “as part of FTL Moda’s mission to #TakeBeautyBack.”

Reshma had this to say:

“This walk was important to me because there are so many girls like me who are survivors of acid attacks, and this will give them courage,” Reshma said, according to the Associated Press. “And it will also go to show people who judge people based on their appearance that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover—you should look at everyone through the same eyes.”
