The Democratic Party is the Party of Interest Groups...Says Former Democrat Senator?

Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) spoke on politics in Richmond on Tuesday. The former senator pulled no punches when it came to describing his own party and why its power has dwindled sharply recently.

“[T]he concern that I have, quite frankly, is that the Democratic party has lost the message that made it such a great party for so many years, and that message was, ‘Take care of working people, take care of the people who have no voice in the corridors of power, no matter their race, ethnicity or any other reason.’ The Democratic party has basically turned into a party of interest groups,” Webb said.

Near the end of his remarks, captured in the video below, Webb added: “[T]he very people who would have a natural affinity to for what the Democratic Party used to offer feel alienated. They feel that the Democratic Party doesn’t want them.”

Webb is absolutely right, other than the part about the Democratic Party’s alleged “greatness.” The party of the Civil War and Jim Crow was never “great.” The party of Jimmy Carter, tax and spend and weakening America at every turn was never “great.” It isn’t great now.

As an evangelical Christian who desires more personal liberty and smaller government, believes in the right to life and strong national security and a strong economy fostered by fair and predictable legal and regulatory frameworks, the Democratic Party tells me every day, quite loudly and with near perfect clarity, that I am its enemy.
