State Department: There Is No Secret Deal with Iran. C'mom, Would We Lie?

Fresh from the campaign to serious foreign policy, relevant experience not required, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf must surely strike fear into the Iranian mullahs.

Iran says that its new agreement between itself and six powers including the US includes some sort of secret side deal.

WASHINGTON – Key elements of a new nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers are contained in an informal, 30-page text not yet publicly acknowledged by Western officials, Iran’s chief negotiator said Monday.
Abbas Araqchi disclosed the existence of the document in a Persian-language interview with the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency.

The new agreement, announced over the weekend, sets out a timetable for how Iran and the six nations, led by the United States, will implement a deal reached in November that is aimed at restraining Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

That’s according to the LA Times.

Iran is crowing that the deal represents a “surrender” by the US and our allies. And it probably does.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney downplayed Rouhani’s remarks when asked about them at Tuesday’s press briefing. He said these kinds of remarks are “expected” and geared toward their government’s “domestic audience.”

“It doesn’t matter what they say. It matters what they do,” he said.

Right, because Carney’s own boss’ actions are so much better and more consistent than what he says.

Either this administration understands that Iran doesn’t negotiate in good faith and is selling a deal that it knows is false, or is naive enough to believe that Iran does negotiate in good faith. Pick your poison.
