An Israeli cargo ship arriving in Oakland today was forced to sit idle and not offload its containers when longshoremen joined forces with a coalition of communist and Islamist groups who picketed the port in protest against the recent violent incident off the coast of Gaza.
The ship, owned by Zim Lines, was not carrying any controversial cargo, nor is Zim involved in politics in any way; it was targeted simply because the shipping company is based in Israel.
The planned protest and blockade were organized by The Free Palestine Movement (one of the same groups which organized the Gaza “flotilla” in the first place) as well as a rogues’ gallery of nearly every communist, anti-Israel and radical Islamist group in the Bay Area:

However, you wouldn’t know any of this if you had just read the mainstream media’s reportage. For example, the San Francisco Chronicle described the protesters as “peace and labor groups”:
“Our view is that the state of Israel can not engage in acts of piracy and kill people on the high seas and still think their cargo can go anywhere in the world,” said Richard Becker, an organizer with ANSWER, one of many peace and labor groups involved in Sunday’s action.
From the list of sponsors above, I don’t see too many “peace” groups, but instead radical Islamic and Arab organizations dedicated to the extirpation of Israel, and some far-left political groups, a couple of which use the word “Peace” in their names as an Orwellian euphemism for “destroy the capitalist system.”

Another false narrative found in the mainstream coverage of today’s incident is the implication that the longshoremen were taken by surprise when they showed up for work this morning but out of principle refused to cross a “picket line.” Again, according to the Chronicle,
The demonstrators want to block the unloading of the Zim ship for a full day. After convincing the day shift of longshoreman to honor the picket line, the demonstrators dispersed around 10 a.m.
First of all, it seems from the online listings announcing the event that labor union groups were among those who organized the protest in the first place, so the longshoremen most likely knew about it ahead of time and had already agreed to blockade the Israeli ship.
Secondly, the phrase “picket line” is being somewhat abused here. Picket lines are traditionally defined as “a common tactic used by trade unions during strikes, who will try to prevent dissident members of the union, members of other unions and ununionised workers from working.” In other words, picketing is supposed to be done by employees, ex-employees, or union members against a business engaging in what they claim are unfair labor practices. But if a group of non-workers and non-union members show up to demonstrate against something they don’t like on purely political grounds, that’s not really a “picket line,” but rather just a “protest.”
The seemingly inconsequential distinction between a “picket line” and a “protest” is significant in this instance, because union members are expected to “not cross a picket line,” but there are no similar enjoinders against “crossing a protest.” If all unionized workers are prohibited from crossing anything self-defined as a “picket line,” then all it would take is three people with homemade signs to shut down any business or corporation by standing out front and declaring themselves to be an uncrossable “picket line,” even though their protest has nothing to do with labor practices or union-busting.
But by using the phrase “picket line,” and ensuring that the media repeats the phrase, it gives cover and plausible deniability to the longshoremen’s union to join in and effectively implement the blockade, without overtly taking credit. “We have nothing against Israel,” they could claim, “but we simply could never cross a ‘picket line’!”
Uh-huh. Right.
Even though the evidence is already overwhelming and continues to grow every day that the “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” was actually a planned jihad attack, the anti-Israel forces are doubling down and hoping that this grotesquely misrepresented incident will be the spark which finally causes the West to turn on Israel and actively work toward its destruction.
This morning’s protest was co-organized by Paul Larudee (paste this URL into a browser window: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/06/20/18651338.php — incoming links to Indybay are disabled), one of the very people who was on the Gaza flotilla itself, and who was given a hero’s welcome upon his return to the Bay Area from a short stint in an Israeli jail. But again, you’re not supposed to know that.
Today’s blockade of the Port of Oakland by anti-Israel forces, in collaboration with the Longshoremen’s Union (ILWU), is the opening of another front in the war on Israel — economic, politcal, propagandistic, and military — which escalates week by week. Will it ever end? Not according to the masterminds of the flotilla:
Meanwhile, Yasser Kashlak, a Syrian businessman of Palestinian descent who heads the “Free Palestine Organization” and is funding this boat, as well as another that is to carry journalists and parliamentarians, said over the weekend on Hizbullah’s al-Manar television station that he was more and more optimistic that one day these same boats would take “Europe’s refuse [the Jews] that came to my homeland back to their homelands.
“Gilad Schalit should go back to Paris and those murderers go back to Poland, and after that we will chase them until the ends of the earth to bring them to justice for their acts of slaughter from Deir Yassin until today.” Kashlak, a fervent Hizbullah supporter, called Israel a “rabid dog sent to the region to frighten the Arabs. He said he had a message for Israelis: ‘Get on the ships we are sending you and go back to your lands. Don’t let the moderate Arab leaders delude you, [you] cannot make peace with us. Our children will return to Palestine, you have no reason for coexistence. Even if our leaders will sign a peace agreement, we will not sign.’”
Clear enough for you?

Keep in mind that the Port of Oakland is not some minor, backwater city-owned port: it is in fact the fourth busiest container port in the country and a major linchpin in the economy of California and the West, serving as the gateway for much of the materials coming from Asia into the United States. A threat to the proper functioning of the Port of Oakland can effect the economy nationwide. It’s not a good sign that fringe groups can dictate which countries get to ship goods into the US. What if someone protested at the port against China‘s human rights record? Would the longshoremen stop unloading Chinese ships and bring most West Coast imports to a halt? Obviously not. Pragmatism dictates that you can bully a small trading partner, but not a big one.
UPDATE II:
The protesters’ plan all along was to protest at the port prior to the arrival of the Zim Lines ship, to ensure that the shift of longshoremen who would be on duty when it did arrive would have already agreed not to do their jobs. But as reported in Israel National News and Gateway Pundit, the Israeli ship arrived several hours later than scheduled, and as things turned out, it was so late that it would not have been unloaded until Monday morning anyway. So the protesters ended up most likely having little or no effect on its actual timetable. Instead, an unrelated Chinese ship at the same berth had its unloading delayed, because the same longshoremen who didn’t cross the “picket line” could not work on it either.
It’s not known if the Zim ship’s late arrival was accidental or if it purposely idled a few hours off the coast to avoid a confrontation at the docks.
Its time to make the Arabs get on the ships and send them back to their countries. Its also time for the West to get off its ass and stop these harassing hyenas from their shenanigans. Send the Moslems back!

Why…why does Israel put up with it? Gaza could be evacuated its population transported to

Those of us , like myself , see population transfer as the most sane and humane solution to many of our problems should remind the world of Fridtjof Nansen , his success and recognition. We should not allow ourselves to be demonized when the facts are on our side.
Since Gaza is Egyptian, there is no reason on earth that all the people currently living there shouldn’t be uploaded and carried on into Egypt proper. The Israelis need to give the problem to Egypt, after all, they are all related.
Gaza belongs to Israel, not Egypt. Otherwise Egypt would be asking for it. Israel should not give up one more inch of land. The so-called Palestinians can relocate to another part of the Arab world, or become productive members of Israel.
I know that Gaza belongs to Israel, why do you think I suggested giving Egypt the people who are currently living There. They are pretty much Egyptian. They need to move into Egypt proper and let go of the land the Israelis won in a war started by Arabs.
One more thing. Israel offered to return Gaza to Egypt, Egypt refused to accept it.

Where people wish to remain they should be able to do so as citizens of Jordan, which already controls seventy-seven percent of territorial Palestine. If Jordan wishes to change its name to Palestine, as the late King Hussein Ibn Talal suggested, that is its right.
Perhaps there are other countries that would allow applications for citizenship. I don’t know.

Nice catch, zombie. I know that section of the Oakland waterfront pretty well, from the seaward side.
If you know anything about the ILWU, you know that for years it’s leader Harry Bridges, was a card-carrying member of the CPUSA, so his radicalism is a legacy with that crew, especially in his Bay Area base.
Now, it seems to me that Management has an interest in not having its legitimate business operations interrupted by SOME people’s political initiatives. Therefore, if that ILWU local, or a portion of its’ membership, is engaging in a political action, and they are calling it a strike, then Management at the terminal has a very valid reason to call that the National ILWU sanction the offending Locals, (by monetary fines paid to Management and suspension or expulsion of the offending members), for engaging in an unauthorized, “wildcat” strike.
I reckon that the vast majority of Bay Area ILWU members have every intention of doing an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, and have no desire whatsoever to have their employment disrupted for the sake of what happened off the coast of Israel to a Turkish ship.
If the ILWU wants to hurt its contracted employers over BS like this, then let it sink. Otherwise, it shoulod expel the clowns playing politics with peoples’ livelihoods, and let THEM be as radical as they like…on their OWN dime.

People tend to forget that the longshoreman’s unions, particularly on the West Coast, were communist-organized and -led for decades. Harry Bridges, the Australian who ran the longshoreman’s union out of San Francisco for decades, was a self-described communist.
The roots go deep.

The leaders of this protest were fully aware that the ZIM vessel had not arrived at the berth but did not care. They prevented almost 100 longshoremen, who left their families on Fathers Day with the intension of making a days wages, to not be able to make squat. The leaders of this radical group did not give a shit and could care less that the vessel they were trying to keep from working was not due to arrive at berth for at least 10 more hours. Although informed several times – their political agenda superseded any empathy for the men and women who honestly wanted to work the CHINESE vessel that they were dispatched for. Very sad. These leaders are nothing more that propagandists who only care that their agenda is carried out no matter what the cost.
They successfully prevented a Chinese vessel from working and cheated 100 longshoremen from being able to work and get paid. Very Sad.
This is, of course, an illegal boycott under U.S. Law. See International Longshoreman’s Assoc. v. Allied Int’l, 456 U.S. 212 (1982), holding that a longshoreman strike against Russian goods in protest of their war against Afghanistan was illegal. Zim Lines should sue, and try to hit the ANSWER fools for civil conspiracy in the process.

The decision not to cross the protesters was made by arbitrator brought in when workers showed up and found their access to docks blocked by protesters.
Longshoremen weren’t “convinced” by anyone protesting anything, they honor their contracts. There are clauses in their contract that allow for cancellation of shift due to safety or health concerns, and this is what the arbitrator ultimately relied upon; that crossing the protest might trigger reactions and result in physical altercations.

So did the SF police decide not to enforce California law? You can’t just block a business, port without breaking laws. And were these big burly longshoremen afraid to cross a protest line under police protection to work inside a homeland security area restricted to only those with legitimate business? These longshoremen could have been brought in from another area by boat.
On the upside, these longshoremen should take the economic hit for their sympathetic strike. Given this is an economic strike the longshoremen had to fabricate a safety reason or be fired. With luck they’ll still have to fight to keep their jobs.

1. Were the policed called since the dock workers felt threaten? Highly doubtful.
2. Was the shift shut down or only going to this 1 ship shut down?
3. Did they attempt to move the ship to another place away from the protesters to unload it?
4. Who was this “arbitrator”.
5. Being it seems they knew about the strike before hand what actions did they take to deal with it?

Now don’t you worry over the details. I’ve rarely, if ever seen a picket line that wasn’t amply supplied with sandwiches, donuts, and a coffee maker. My mother was a union worker with a large corporation back in ’70s-’80s. Other than Mom not getting paid, the couple of strikes she was involved with were quite the social events, almost like mini-company pep-rallies.

The red-green alliance never ceases to amaze me. I’ve always thought that eventually the Islamist movements would attempt something that the Reds would have to find distasteful, but that is apparently not going to happen anytime soon. Just to point out the irony here, Israel is the only country in the Middle East that has what Westerners would recognize as a labour movement. Union and labour leaders have not faired well at all in the region, but their co-ideologists in the West overwhelmingly support their totalitarian governments over them and often consider these very same fellow-travelers to be imperialist stooges. Leftists in the West backed Khomeini’s red-green alliance against the Shah but most did not utter a peep of protest when the red part of the movement was exterminated, leaving only the Mullahs in charge. Saddam Hussein was a villain to the international left until America launched the first Gulf War in response to his invasion of Kuwait; overnight, he became a freedom fighter and his crimes against the Kurds, Shi’ites, and organized labour leaders were quickly forgotten.
Essentially, the problem is that the left has fallen in love with destruction. In the past, there was a desire for creative destruction that would usher in a new order to replace the exploitation of the workers; now, there is no utopia to strive for, so destruction has become the end goal instead of a tactic. The left’s nihilism allows it to work with the green alliance even though it is clearly imperialistic in nature and seeks to abrogate the rights the left claims to want.
The San Francisco Bay area is a hot bed of Communist and Marxist. Nothing that happens around there surprises me any more. I think it is time that we broke the Union grip on this country once and for all. Thank God for the Unions, they have made working in manufacturing a lot safer but they ran out of useful projects and the leadership does not want to give up their high living style so they start this kind of thing. I remember in the sixties when the Construction Workers Union took on the anti war protests. Nikita Khrushchev said in the sixties that they would bury us, well it too over 40 years but they were patient and look what is in Washington now, and the people elected him. I just Pray we can get rid of him before he does damage to The United States that can not be fixed.

I am kind of curious as to why an Israeli ship would be docking on the West coast but I suggest that if possible they might want to consider the Port of Houston instead.
On the West Coast, might I suggest that Zim look into the option of using the port of Topolobampo, near Los Mochis in Sinaloa, Mexico. The railroad link there is now complete and connects directly into the midwestern United States. I am pretty confident that if Zim becomes a significant part of the Topolobampo port traffic, the authorities will actively discourage this sort of labor action, particularly if Zim were to invest in improving the port’s cargo handling infrastructure.
Zim, though a company based in Israel, is an international shipper. They don’t just carry Israeli goods. Almost certainly, they were conveying Asian goods, so a West coast port makes eminent sense.

Sources inform ”Globes” that the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) hosted representatives of the Palestine Securities Exchange (PSE) on Monday. TASE CEO Esther Levanon met her counterpart Ahmad Awaida to consider ways of cooperating.
The last time representatives of the two stock exchanges met was in 1995, when the late Yitzhak Rabin was prime minister.
Based in Nablus, the PSE has 39 companies listed. The market is open five days a week from 10 am to 1 pm. Seven of the companies are banks, five are insurance, eight are investment firms, ten are manufacturers, and nine are service companies. The PSE only trades in stocks; there are no options or other financial instruments, because there is no demand for them.
Two months ago, Awaida was a guest at the Herzog Fox Neeman law firm’s Arab Business Conference, where he talked about the Palestinian capital market and options for raising money on it. Most of the participants at the conference were Israeli-Arab businessmen, such as Hamis Abulafia, and Israelis who invest in the Arab sector, such as Pitango Venture Capital managing partner Chemi Peres.
