Blue Staters Gotta Blue State

August 25th, 2014 - 2:33 pm

Mobility is one of the great American virtues. When we see a better opportunity somewhere else, we pack up and move. Or if things get bad enough in our present locale, we’ll go to a better one. But some things are best left behind:

Over the last few decades, residents of many traditionally liberal states have moved to states that were once more conservative. And this pattern has played an important role in helping the Democratic Party win the last two presidential elections and four of the last six. The growth of the Latino population and the social liberalism of the millennial generation may receive more attention, but the growing diaspora of blue-state America matters as well.

The blue diaspora has helped offset the fact that many of the nation’s fastest-growing states are traditionally Republican. You can think of it as a kind of race: Population growth in these Republican states is reducing the share of the Electoral College held by traditionally Democratic states. But Democratic migration has been fast enough, so far, to allow the party to overcome the fact that the Northeast and industrial Midwest contain a smaller portion of the country’s population than they once did.

Locusts.

Liberals... Looters... Locusts... Absolutely right.

These idiots flee the insanity of states run by liberals to conservative/libertarian states, and they bring their outdated, stupid ideas with them. Then they turn reasonable states into open sewers.

The 'L' word you are looking for is not locusts, it is looters. The word as imagined by the greatest prophet(ess) of the past 1500 years, one Ms. Ayn Rand. Who foresaw Every.... G--..... Damned... Element.... of the world we see around us.... decades ago, including the "looters" who would suck the wealth of whatever environment they lived in in their schemes to "make a better world" (schemes that always benefitted them in no small measure) until that economic environment was a dry barren husk of its former self, and then move on to the next one, wash, rinse, repeat.

Of course, "locusts" fits perfectly well with one difference - that word does not give the Prophetess Ayn Rand (PBUH) her due..... for calling this crap right.... down.... the .... freeking.... line.... full stop.... decades ago.

Nostradamus was a piker.

Little did we know an entire political party would take her warning as a users manual.

It is so aggravating that this happens. I used to live in a Montana town where the favorite phrase of the mayor, before actually acting on it, was "what a man does on his own property is his own business". It was such a nice town that the Californians moved in and suddenly everything was regulated, the only discussion related to what the best regulation would be. The mayor lost an election, was later re-elected, but only after he dropped that phrase.

I had a conversation with a liberal Boomer couple who had just moved from Baltimore, Maryland (as liberal as you would expect) to Frederick, Maryland (small city, in a conservative county. The Boomers said that they left Baltimore because they didn't like the quality of life and (unless they were flat out trolling me) unironically complained that Frederick was not progressive enough.

Story of modern America. Gorram liberal Boomers.

I have co-workers who live in Fredrick, but fairly conservative. They noticed that most of their neighbors came from Montgomery county (fleeing taxes) and are trying to turn their developments into mini-Montogomery counties since the rural farms they took over were just "too redneck".

It's another case of wanting things, but not wanting to pay for them.

Not locusts so much as just human livestock. They don't want to live in the wild like citizens, and they only dimly recognize that life is better where they haven't already ruined everything, but they still blame their ruination on citizens instead of themselves.
