North Korean Official Reportedly Executed by Flamethrower

April 8th, 2014 - 10:51 am

You read that right:

According to this report in one of South Korea’s leading newspapers, The Chosun Ilbo, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s administration shuttered a bureaucracy once headed by Kim’s recently-executed uncle and killed or imprisoned 11 high-ranking officials.

The morbid twist: Quoting an anonymous source, the paper reported that O Sang Hon, the deputy public security minister, was “executed by flamethrower.”

If true, the killing shows the chilling lengths to which Kim is willing to go to expunge any trace of his executed uncle, Jang Song Thaek, once a powerful player in North Korean politics. Now, months after Jang’s execution and his temporary erasure from state media, Jang’s older sister and her husband — North Korea’s ambassador to Cuba, Jon Yong Jin — have also reportedly been executed.

Unlike his father and grandfather, Li’l Kim seems to think fear is all it takes to hold a totalitarian government together.

He’s wrong, but he won’t learn until he gets the full Ceaușescu treatment.

I know it’s a fool’s game trying to forecast North Korean politics, but I think we’ve seen enough of the current regime to say with some confidence that the end won’t be pretty, and that it will be sudden.

Maybe the flamethrower thing didn't really happen. As I said when the "death by pack of dogs" thing came out a few months back, maybe he told an advisor to come up with something dramatic to put out to the world to make himself seem more bada$$. Not that I'd put actually doing it past him, of course.

I wonder what it is with humanity that those who have freedom and a reasonable way of life tolerate societies that completely enslave and terrorize their citizens. I do not have a smooth, quick easy answer to the NK horror, but I am sure there is a pathway to humanity for their citizens. How can we help?

It will be as pretty and as un-sudden, as the "fall" of Communist Viet Nam, Communist USSR, Communist Cuba, or Communist Venezuela…

Not with a bang but with a whimper, as some other Clique of the same approximate stripe takes over and makes whatever modest changes are required to keep THEM at the helm without a total collapse….they may not live not AS large as the man they gently (or not so gently) deposed, but they will in control (that’s the whole point isn’t it?) and nothing much will ever really change…

In other words, hows Rumania doing these days?

Yeah, I thought so

As Ibn Khaldun said, the first generation wins the kingdom, the second generation fritters away the kingdom, and the third generation loses the kingdom.

I'm sure there's some branch of psychology for which the fall of North Korea will be a boon. What other society has lasted so long in such an Orwellian state? North Korean escapees in South Korea have been found to be quite warped.

I always wonder what sort of message is being sent with the unusual method of execution. Everybody gets a bullet except, now and then, a more creative method is used. Why? And why flamethrower, specifially? Who thought of it?

Why a message? Maybe Kim Jong Un is simply a sadist who has the power to indulge himself.

Evil may sometimes be banal, but it doesn't have to be. Why use a "maybe" to dismiss any but the most boring conclusion?

My thought exactly, which is why the Full Ceaușescu seems increasingly likely.

The "Full" Ceaușescu?

Ceaușescu got off easy....a quick burst from a couple AK's and it was over, like 30 seconds after he was told it was coming….so swift and merciful they didnt even have time to get it all on film...

No parade through town at the end of a rope under a shower of rocks and bottles. No hanging upside-down like Mussolini. No beatings or knife up the keyster like Qadaffi.

Ceaușescu got off easy…lets hope they DON’T do the “full Ceaușescu” on Kim, he hasn’t earned it.

As another infamous narcissist once said, "I did it...because I could".

It might be that the constant tension and the ceaseless killings have eroded the terror of the threat of simple death.
