The Story That Even the Master Chief Can’t Kill

March 20th, 2013 - 2:24 pm

Another week, another report that the new Xbox won’t play used games:

Following a number of reports claiming Microsoft’s (MSFT) next-generation video game console, codenamed “Durango,” will block users’ ability to play preowned games, a new report appears to back up those claims. In a series of purported screenshots from Microsoft’s Durango SDK published by Vgleaks.com, several earlier rumors regarding Microsoft’s next console appear to have been confirmed. Among them is the claim that game play from a disk will not be supported, and users will instead have to install games to the device’s hard drive in order to play.

It’s hard to believe that Microsoft would be so foolish. But these stories do keep popping up. And then there’s Windows RT. So I dunno: Maybe Redmond really has gone mad.

I bet if you looked at what MS does from a business standpoint (rather than a consumer standpoint) its strategies would make more sense. They aren't a charity, they are driven to maximize profits. Once you have 95% market penetration, you can only improve revenues by getting more money from your customer base.
Who does gaming consoles right? What are we supposed to compare MS to?

It makes little sense, it's turning off consumers and short of them getting a ton of must play exclusives they will lose customers to Nintendo and Sony.

I bought the Xbox and the 360 but with this news I'm strongly considering switching to a PS4 or a WiiU. Not havin the ability to play used games is a HUGE turn off. As a company they can do whatever e hell they want and as consumers we can make a statement by not buying their system.

I think MS is going to be in for a surprise.

I can remember when MicroSoft wasn't so fussed about IP. In fact, they were thrilled to get everyone in the world using Windows 3.x, and there was no registration or verification.

Now they've got something like 95% market penetration, and they're trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip. :-/
