I’m much clearer on what Republican voters hope to buy than I am on what the Republican Party is actually selling. The Tea Party may fix that, but it hasn’t yet. Meanwhile, there is a major branding issue on the whole “small govt vs big govt” choice we want to believe we’re faced with. And that branding issue is called “compassionate conservatism.”
Whatever the luck and gimmickry involved, the last balanced budget was submitted by Democrat Bill Clinton. Republican George Bush put us back on the path of fiscal insolvency. Unless and until the Republican Party sits a president who actually makes government smaller and reduces the deficit, they can’t just say that’s who they are. That advantage has been squandered.
What we need is a Republican of clear conserative principles who understands those principles enough to make an argument for them. We may have that in 2016, the problem with 2012 is that it was too soon after the Rise of the Tea Party for those Republicans to get into position.
Is it just me or does Paula Broadwell look surprisingly like those East German “female” athletes at the Olympics during the ’70s and ’80s? Seriously, been juicing those arm muscles, haven’t we?
