At least O’Hara (also of Beetlejuice fame, btw) was funny.
P.J. O’Rourke wrote a piece about the Sandanistas’ loss in a Nicaraguan election that mentioned that the Sandys had an election poster with a young couple walking hand in hand into the sunset, with a caption on it reading something like, “When You Do It the First Time, Do It for Love.”
So the meme has been around for a while.
Most of your readers may not know it but that clip is from a Canadian show called SCTV. It aired in a few incarnations in Canada from 1976 to 84 and was a brilliant spoof of local broadcasting. John Candy, Rick Moranis, Catherine OHara, Dave Thomas, Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy and Harold Ramis. Still hilarious today (eh!)
