A soundtrack almost nobody bought to a movie almost nobody went to see, even though both were superior efforts. I did both, but I suspect the reason for the swing and the miss is that the movie and the soundtrack just don’t mesh.
It’s still a killer song though.

The movie version of 1984 was a surprise dud at the box office during its eponymous year, but it’s become quite a well-respected film over the years. I think it’s obvious it was made with loving care for the underlying book. I’m pretty sure it’s available for streaming on both Netflix and Amazon Prime.
The Eurythmics soundtrack was one of my favorite mid-’80s synth albums; I think I ended up ordering a used copy on Amazon six or seven years ago. It’s not stuff I want to play every day, but I come back to it pretty often. And the ballad “Julia” is a killer track — which I may very well link to again this coming week…
I’ve always thought that 1984 was the best movie adaptation of a book ever made. Without having read the book, you would have very little idea what’s going on. John Hurt was outstanding, and I loved Richard Burton’s understated performance.
Agreed. It was all-around excellent. Maybe the real reason it bombed is that the real 1984 was so good, that people just couldn’t take any interest in the movie 1984.
This album has been on my “play list” since even before the concept existed. Doubleplusgood performances by Lennox & Stuart. When I was a party DJ I used to slip in the more danceable numbers when I felt I could get away with it.
I have this album on cassette! I was a big Eurythmics fan at the time. Never did get around to seeing the movie. The story i had heard is that 1984 (the year) was coming up and no 1984 (movie) was slated. The producer ended up crambling for funds to get this done in time for a 1984 release.
