The Swedish Chef? Actually Norwegian.
That was a really long article to say that a Nordic sounding language made up by a New York puppeteer for his wacky character he named “The Swedish Chef” doesn’t sound Swedish to actual Swedes… is a revelation. /sarc
And I’ll stop worrying about offending Swedes when people stop asking me if I own a horse and oil well when they find out I’m from TX.
My childhood was based on a lie!
Well, we know what his original language is, from Jean Stapleton’s visit to The Muppet Show: Mock Japanese.
Echoes of “Hell on Weels:” “My name is Thor Gundersen. They call me The Swede. Actually I am Norwegian, but no matter. We’re all Americans now, no?”
Reminds me of a hoary joke I used to hear back in Minnesota:
“Are you Swedish?”
“No, I’m Norvegan.”
“Are you sure you’re Norvegan? You LOOK Swedish.”
“Well, I been sick tree weeks.”
My Swedish friends need to lighten up a bit. The Swedish Chef no more speaks Swedish than Sid Caesar’s Frenchman character spoke French on Your Show Of Shows. Any intelligent viewer could spot that within seconds of viewing either. And when you consider the stereotyped caricatures of “‘Murcans” that appear so often in European TV and film I hardly think there is much room here for credible outrage.
That is a big deal if you are Swedish or Norwegian.
It is just comedic babble chatter. A good dialect comedian can deliver a German babble, a Scandinavian babble, aFrench babble, an Italian babble. If you have ever lived in a Norwegian community, its very easy to pick up a “Yah. Shuur, Youbetcha” mockery of their sing-song English speech. There used to be a dialect comedian, Yogi Yorgeson, the Hindu Mystic. The Norwegian lilt plus a lot of pursed “ooo” words are the essence. It is silly for anyone to take offense at dialectic babble. It can be hilarious viz the Swedish Chef. why Swedish? I am sure they tried “The Danish Chef” and the Norwegian Chef” and “The Scandinavian Chef”. Swedish Chef works better.
