RIP: Amy Winehouse
They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, “No, no, no”
Yes, I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know, know, know
I ain’t got the time and if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab, I won’t go, go, go
I’d rather be at home with Ray
I ain’t got seventeen days
‘Cause there’s nothing, there’s nothing you can teach me
That I can’t learn from Mr. Hathaway
I didn’t get a lot in class
But I know we don’t come in a shot glass
They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, “No, no, no”
Yes, I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know know know
I ain’t got the time and if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab, I won’t go, go, go
The man said, “Why do you think you here?”
I said, “I got no idea”
I’m gonna, I’m gonna lose my baby
So I always keep a bottle near
He said, “I just think you’re depressed
Kiss me, yeah baby and go rest”
They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, “No, no, no”
Yes, I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know, know, know
I don’t ever wanna drink again
I just, ooh, I just need a friend
I’m not gonna spend ten weeks
Have everyone think I’m on the mend
And it’s not just my pride
It’s just ’til these tears have dried
They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, “No, no, no”
Yes, I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know, know, know
I ain’t got the time and if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab, I won’t go, go, go

I can’t decide whether it’s more “sad” or “ironic” – quite the mix of both, I guess.
Is there anyone out there who didn’t see this as her end?
It was like watching a train bearing down on a car stuck on the crossing. You can see the train a mile off, so there’s “plenty of time”, but the train can’t stop. If you don’t move the car, the train will destroy it.
Ms. Winehouse just never seemed to be able to step away from the front of that train.
There was a sketch on Saturday Night Live (in the early years) about John Belushi as an old man visiting the graves of the other “Not Ready for Prime Time Players”.
Even then, they knew he was doomed. This is the same thing.
I don’t give a rats ass. Good riddance Winehouse and anyone else who wants to follow you.
I made this point at dinner with friends the other night. Even Keith Richards wasn’t this obvious: her big hit was about how she didn’t want to stop taking drugs. When I first heard it I thought it must be satirical, but once we got to know Ms. Winehouse it only seemed sad. Now it seems really sad, and terribly predictable.
