Dumber and Dumber and Dumberest

August 27, 2010 - 11:01 am - by Stephen Green

I am, of course, talking about the latest dumb move by the stupid party, the GOP. Read:

If President Barack Obama needed any more incentive to go all out for Democrats this fall, here it is: Republicans are planning a wave of committee investigations targeting the White House and Democratic allies if they win back the majority.

Everything from the microscopic — the New Black Panther party — to the massive –- think bailouts — is on the GOP to-do list, according to a half-dozen Republican aides interviewed by POLITICO.

This is an issues election, and the issues are more important than any in our lifetimes. People want action, they want results — and they’re going to need a new majority party to get those results. And that new majority party is going to need a popular mandate.

And you don’t get a mandate by running on a platform of bickering. Investigations can wait. And besides, does the GOP think they can do a better job of repudiating 18 months of bad Democratic policy than the American people will do on November 2? It’s almost as if they’re trying to lose.

Get smart, GOP. The issues are all in your favor right now.

Don’t be stupid.

UPDATE: You honestly have no idea how brain-punchingly stupid the Stupid Party is, until you read this exclusive report.

  1. Hmm. I agree in part. If they were to make this the centerpiece of the next two years, it would be an incredibly bad move on the ‘Pubs part. But they need to open up a major can of whupass on Obama and the Dems. And part of that is sunshine. They have to show the American public how incredibly corrupt and inept this administration is. The only real way they’re going to do that is by opening up investigations.

    Holder’s got to go. So does Sebelius. Geithner and company should be on the firing line as well.

    The only way a lot of that is going to happen is by digging into the machinery Obama’s got built up, and by putting the brakes on anything new. Do we really want him creating more Czars? Really?

    Yes, the Republicans need to create an environment where the private sector can start trusting the economy and create jobs. But I think the investigations have to be part of that. Not as a symbol, but as a part of the fundamental actions needed to restore our confidence.

    And yes, the Republicans are still the Stupid Party. I’m really hoping the TP movement is strong enough to just take the damn lot of them over from the inside. It’ll be a lot quicker and more effective in the short-term that way. Otherwise, we’re going to have to start picking them off from the outside. Which will take much more time, and may hand the Dems some short- and medium-term advantages, until the Democrats finish destroying themselves.

    It’s a hell of a slog, no matter what route we take. And shining a light on the vipers nest infesting DC is a fundamental tool in our arsenal.

      Assuming they take the house they’ll have plenty of time to squander on committee investigations after Obama vetoes all the bills they pass. At that point such actions may be a good idea but not something to campaign on.

  2. This is the natural outgrowth of an environment that has long favored party loyalty and “brand” over ideas. The establishment Republicans don’t have any ideas this year (although the Tea Party might forcibly inject some) – they just want all of the power that Obama’s accumulated for themselves.

    So anyway, when everything is about the brand, don’t be surprised when you see brand warfare over anything more substantive.

    Where have all the REPUBLICANS gone?
    Long time passing
    Where have all the REPUBLICANS gone?
    Long time ago
    Where have all the REPUBLICANS gone?
    LOBBIEST have picked them every one
    When will they ever learn?
    When will they ever learn?

    Channeling my inner Han Solo from the first movie, “Don’t get cocky kid!”

    Thus, I never underestimate the ability of Republicans to shoot themselves in both feet with one bullet.

    Republican victory in November will work out best if it’s a different Republican Party than the one we currently have. And that means aggressive Tea Party participation in the primaries. Otherwise, victory in 2010 will simply lead to a second Obama term.

      As an Irishman, I am duty bound to hate Oliver Cromwell; nevertheless, every now and then I am reminded of this speech and I have to go read it again:

      Dissolution of the Long Parliament by Oliver Cromwell given to the House of Commons, 20 April 1653

      It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

      Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter’d your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

      Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

      In the name of God, go!

      Even the Micks are getting it. Smells like victory, and stale beer.

    We keep sending a message and it keeps getting lost in translation.

    Does anyone here speak Porkugese or Tagalong?

    And Murkowski’s bona fides for being a Libertarian are. . . what, exactly?

    Seems like the Alaskan LP has as much integrity as the Republicans or Democrats.

    • rbj,

      Maybe all the intelligent and principled libertarians left the capital-L party for Tea Parties, and this is what’s left over.

    • Gary Ogletree

      The whole thing is a cleverly designed Palinist plot to split the Alaska Libertarian Party while exposing to the whole world what a fool Murkowski is. I understand Piper is behind it.

  8. And Murkowski’s bona fides for being a Libertarian are. . . what, exactly?

    1. A $ 1,000,000 war chest

    2. If the Alaska LP gets at least 5% of the vote in November in the Senate race, they have guaranteed ballot access for at least the next eight years

  9. 9. saveliberty

    Oh wow, that is stupid.

    You are right, this is an issues election and voters want results.

    We need a good non-partisan lynch party for the most offensive members of both parties. Then a gentle suggestion that there is plenty of rope and under used lamp post remaining should they be needed.

    I really don’t think any other action will get their joint attention.

  11. I agree, there is a need for some investigation on a couple things, but a GOP congress should focus on getting things done RIGHT NOW to help with the economy, cut spending, reduce the deficit, and roll back the lunacy of the Democrats.

    It is all Greek to them, so,two quotes
    from Cicero, in plain English:

    The wise are instructed by reason;
    ordinary minds by experience;
    the stupid, by necessity;
    and brutes by instinct.”
    and
    When weapons are drawn, the law falls silent.

    Cicero (106 BC – 43 BC)

    There is not time to evade the economic collapse,
    let alone reform the ruling political class;
    If TPTB, the current Congress Critters, cannot
    be made to follow good advice from their betters,
    and help the nation through the coming Hard Times,
    their lifetime guarantee of incumbency will be voided,
    one way or the other.

    I’ve come to hate Holder so much that he is an issue to me.

    But results? Without veto-proof majorities, all conservatives in Congress can do is apply the brakes to Obamanism, expose his corruption, and force him to veto popular legislation. Not bad, but it’s not the same as achieving results on the issues, unless “results” are simply catching up to where we were in January 2009. Come to think of it, that’s not bad either.

    But to the broader point, yes, the GOP is dumb. Thank God the Democrats are dumberer. Although that does leave the country in the hands of the dumb and the dumberer, which isn’t much to thank anyone for.

    Thanks for letting me ramble.

  14. 14. Chris

    Reminds me of Democrats calling for war crimes investigations against the Bush administration after the last election. Pretty brain dead.

    • Chris, I don’t think it’s that bad. The American people deserve some answers about Holder’s abandonment of the New Black Panther complaint, the Sestak horsetrade, and other items named at the Politico article. It’s not like the Democrats’ war crimes joke or the Lewinsky investigation. Corruption investigations could also be beneficial if Valerie Jarrett were occupied with damage control and backstage massacres instead of advising Obama on troop movements and U.S. bond credit ratings.

  15. 15. jen

    I agree with arhooley. There are many issues regarding Democrat corruption that are buried deep and many people would like to keep them that way. Perhaps some of the posters are writing how “ridiculous” this is because they PREFER these things be kept out of the public eye. Unless we want to keep preaching to the choir for another six years, yes, we need to do some heavy investigation into what BHO and Co. has been doing to our country.
