Not for Sale at Any Price

I don’t know what amazingly great product Steve Jobs is about to announce — but the Apple Store is still up and running, so I doubt it’ll be available even for pre-order any time soon.
Then again, it’s running slowly, so it seems there’s plenty of interest in the God Tablet or whatever.
UPDATE: It’s called iPad.

No info on what I think is the most important thing – do they have a DRM system for books that’s not a pile of crap? That’s what’s keeping me off the Kindle / Nook.
“Applet”?
I know, bad.
“Applet”?
Does the Vodkapundit allow Java jokes here?
Isn’t the correct technical term “insanely great?”
It looks like an iMaxiPod to me.
Apple shoots…and misses as badly as when they kept the Mac closed-sourced.
“…as when they kept the Mac closed-sourced.”
Presumably in stark contrast to the rampant success of open-source operating systems in desktop markets?
Some things work very well as open-source software, like web servers. Other things do not, like, anything with a UI that normal people have to interact with.
Besides, the Mac is pretty closed-sourced now. Darwin is open-source, but that’s only one aspect of the software they ship. Their secret sauce, arguably, is the closed-source proprietary apps they continue to make.
Sure, there’s all the GUI front-ends for the open-source Darwin frameworks, and proprietary apps with open-source cores like Safari. But everything from iTunes to Final Cut Pro is good old closed-source commercial software.
And I wouldn’t qualify any of that as a “miss”.
I’m sorry but the name is just…wrong. Especially with the three different sizes it just screams maxi, regular & lite iPads. Did they even think of the possibilities here?
I heard there were audible groans as Jobs announced that it would be tied to the ATT network.
Really, though, if I have a smart phone, and a laptop, and I do, there really isn’t a reason to have one of these. I’m afraid it’s fated to be a mild success at best.
Regarding DRM music or books, I’m not a pirate in any sense of the word, but I only buy DRM media if I have already found a means by which I can immediately strip the DRM. I MIGHT feel that it would be wrong to do so, but they’re often charging full price for the digital media. If they’re going to charge full price, WITH DRM, then I must protect my investment and make sure that I won’t lose the media when upgrading, replacing hardware, etc.
One major thing jumped out at me: no multitasking. WTF!?
