Sherlock Holmes: A Movie Review in Five Words
December 27th, 2009 - 10:16 am
I want Jeremy Brett back.
UPDATE: Many of you have given ringing endorsements to Basil Rathbone, and I’d be the last person to belittle the first, best Holmes. But while Rathbone played a great Holmes, Brett was Holmes.
Case closed.

From childhood I was a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories. As I grew older and realized that Holmes used cocaine injections on a regular basis, I began to realize that this habit reflected a more complex persona than I had realized.
Jeremy Brett remains – for me – the only actor to have captured – or rather – revealed to me the comprehensive and textured character of this most complex of detective characters.
That’s a lot more than 5 words, but I couldn’t agree more.

i want basil rathbone back.
I want Robert Downey Jr., back.
There’s only one Sherlock Holmes, Basil Rathbone!
I a fan of Robert Downey Jr., but the commercials have been peddling Sherlock Holmes as an action hero and sorry but I just can’t see him that way so it’s highly unlikely I will see this movie.
I think that’s five words. Give or take.
Indeed.
I want Reagan back.
I want Darryl Zero back.
They can’t write anything creative so they delight in destroying better stories.
Double ditto on Jeremy Brett!
Jeremy Brett was indeed the greatest Sherlock Holmes ever. I doubt if anyone will ever equal his performances, and I wish he’d lived long enough to finish the remaining tales.
How ridiculous is the homoerotic stuff between Holmes and Watson?
Forget five words, I’ll give you five letters:
JB FTW
Hell, I’ll settle for having W. back. Or even, God help me, Jimmy Carter back. (Did I really write that?)
I am interested in seeing the Sherlock Holmes movie, but I don’t want to see yet another action movie. Action movie + spy = James Bond. Exploding building movie = Die Hard.
Here’s a crazy thought, how about a mystery movie that appeals to one’s brain, i.e., thinking.
I saw Sherlock Holmes over the weekend. It was a harmless popcorn flick. I’d never pay anything more than Netflix fees to see it again, and ditto for any movies that follow it.
Definitely not a deep intellectual experience, that is for darn sure, but for this type of movie, I wasn’t expecting much.
I also want my groove back.
I was so sad when Jeremy Brett died. Now who would play Sherlock Holmes. Noone, obviously. He was the best.
Yep. I always pictured Holmes as the borderline psychotic genius. Brett WAS Holmes. That, and Mycroft was played by Charles Geay, who was the narrator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Another “yep, that’s HIM” part.
Sorry, that’s ‘Gray’, not ‘Geay’. Tired fingers.
Green’s got it. Brett always and for ever.
Whenever I see the name Mycroft, I always think first of Mike from The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. Poor Mike.
Brett was the consummate Holmes. I am currently enjoying a new approach to the Holmes writings….Reading them!
Duchess bought me the complete works of Sherlock Holmes, including all the original drawings….It is marvelous!
