Sleeping with the Enemy

July 6, 2009 - 9:51 am - by Stephen Green

This seems healthy for democracy:

“A few nights ago I was up tossing and turning and trying to figure out exactly what to say,” [President Obama] said. “Finally, when I couldn’t get back to sleep, I rolled over and asked Brian Williams what he thought.”

The reference to the NBC anchor and host of the prime-time “Inside the Obama White House” special this spring drew loud laughter.

There’s no denying that broadcast networks and the president have occasionally worked for their mutual benefit: Obama gets public platforms for his ideas and the networks get programming that delivers strong ratings at a time when that’s hard to come by.

Or, you know, not.

The idea that broadcast boys like Brian Williams might lead the Democrats, as Rush does lead the Republicans, is absurd; hence the suggestion “drew loud laughter.”
    Now do you understand?

  2. Although I don’t find him so (and therefore don’t listen), Limbaugh is an entertainer.

If that’s what Williams wants to be, maybe his “news” programs should come with a disclaimer.

Oh. Of course. It obviously has nothing to do with the rather incestuous relationship that has developed between Obama and the MSM. And his attempt to deflect the rising criticism (even coming from within the press ranks of late; see Thomas, Helen).

How silly of us. Thinking that the MSM is carrying Obama’s water, and that they might be helping him to implement policy (see Post, Washington).

We truly are daft. Please forgive our complete ignorance of the “facts”. You have truly enlightened us.

No one is suggesting that the press leads the Democrats. We’re observing the plain truth that Obama leads the press.

Thanks for explaining the joke, though. It was one of those lines – like Bush’s “This is an impressive crowd. The haves and the have-mores. Some people call you the elite. I call you my base” – that was funny because it had absolutely no foundation in fact, huh?

I’ll take “Janus Daniels missing the point” for 10o.

    Quote
Finally, when I couldn’t get back to sleep, I rolled over and asked Brian Williams what he thought.”

What does that have to do with leading the party? That has to do with the media being in bed with Obama.

Get it? He was sleeping and he rolled over and there was Brian Williams.

You see, there’s a difference between “leading” and “carrying water for”.

I do have to love bgates comment, whenever Obama is called on something, Bush is always brought up.

Comparing Obama to a man that’s worse than Hitler (Chimpy McBusHitler was my personal favorite) is now a defense.

    That’s funny.

A pale substitute for understanding it, but I’ll take what I can get.

See, Janus made the claim that you could tell Obama’s joke was absurd because people laughed. If jokes can only be funny when they are absurd, then Bush’s joke about having the support of the rich must have been absurd too. Ah! A contradiction. For ideologues like Janus, and probably simpletons like Veeshir, recognize that the Bush joke was funny because it was true. And if a joke can be both funny and true, Obama’s line about being in bed with the media can be both funny and true.

I didn’t compare Obama to Bush as a defense, I did it as an illustration. Let me know if this is still too complicated for you, and I’ll see if I can’t whip up something with hand puppets and stick figure drawings that might be more your speed.

  7. BG –

I’ve always subscribed to the dictum: “Only the truth is funny.” Even if sometimes funny makes my eyes all wet.

Hey JD if you’d like to do a compare and contrast between the mainstream media’s treatment of Bush vs Obama (or even Bill Cliton) then why don’t you go first and we’ll follow along shortly. Could be interesting.

  9. 9. Larry J

Obama has been the beneficiary of the longest press blowjob in US history. Even FDR and Clinton didn’t have the press so strongly in bed with them.

  10. 10. Brad

Obama’s press blowjob, as Larry so aptly describes the current love affair, supersedes all the blowjobs Clinton got in the White House for 8 years. I’m surprised his “press” conferences aren’t a gagfest.

  11. 11. NukemHill

I’m sorry, but bringing up “longest press blowjob” after I mentioned Helen Thomas is just freaking me out. I mean, really. Did you have to go there?

    Really??

I need to scrub my brain now. Anyone know where I put those psychic brillo-pads?

  12. 12. Steve Ducharme

Thanks NukemHill! Coffee out my nose on that one. Damm that stings!! LOL

    I obviously misread bgates comment.

I should have mentioned he was rude and takes personal shots when challenged, but I try to stick to what people write instead of commenting on their intelligence or maturity.
