Got a lot on my plate right now, including two essays I can’t seem to complete and starting a new business. Yikes. So tonight, just this:
RIYADH, 2 May 2006
RIYADH, 2 May 2006
They may not execute her since she’s not from Saudi Arabia. Granted, she managed to fight back and most people don’t.
A Filipina I knew lost her job… I believe it was in Kiwait but it may have been in Saudi. One of the other maids got raped so they sent every single Filipina maid home so there would be no witnesses, I guess. It’s not that it’s always the girl who gets in trouble for being raped but that the man involved gets so seriously in trouble for rape that the girl gets executed for the “false” charge.
Do you really have to use the expression “a lot on my plate” in a story about a severed penis?
Sounds like a cock and bull story, designed to stroke tensions.
RBJ – I doubt it’s a “cock and bull story, designed to stroke… [Any pun intended there?!?] There have been numerous stories in the paper’s here [Saudi] about maid’s being abused [physically, sexually]. The difference between the stories I’ve read in the past three years – and this one – well, this maid prevented the act from taking place. Just practicing safe sex – and on the brighter side, no worry of an unwanted pregnancy. Wonder where the media is for this story? Oh, yeah, they’re still in Durham covering the Duke case…
Beth, it would take a lot of balls to make puns about this story.
I do say hooray for the woman. The guy got what he deserved, IMO. I just hope she’s all right, and gets to leave the country soon and intact.
I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on the internet, but I’ve got to wonder about the long term success of a “speedy surgery” to reattach a severed penis. The layman in me (no pun intended) just imagines what a vasular nightmare such a surgery might be.
Many years ago, while in the military and based in the Philippines, I came across many maids (or “housegirls” as we called them) who had stories about mistreatment while employed in the Mid-east. I’m not surprised at all that rape of the help is not uncommon there.
Vodkapundit – I wanted to post this column over at The Religious Policeman, and then had second thoughts about doing so. I’d hate to be blocked from a whole bunch of websites just because I couldn’t help sharinng… I think just the title, “Our Saudi Friends” would probably offend some folks there. It’s too bad, really, that in today’s day and age so many of us have to worry about censorship.
