InsideDefense (subscription required) reports that Washington finally undestands the Media War:
An influential advisory panel to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is exploring the military implications of powerful Internet search engines like Google, online journals and other new tools for accessing and distributing information.
Kenneth Krieg, under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, has directed the Defense Science Board to conduct a summer study examining

theres someone named “krieg” aka the german word for “War” in the department of defense?
And shouldn’t the Department of Defense, like, know a thing or two about the Internet?
Silly idea, I know. Not sure where I might have got it from.
Hm. I’m a wee bit curious as to what’s in those WHB emails.
Information Operations has been a part of doctrine for a while. I think what the military has finally figured out is that they can’t rely on the US media to tell the truth.
It seems you don’t get it at all. The military has a series of private Internet-type networks like NIPRNET, SIPRNET, and the like, each for different levels of security classification. They’re developing a much more powerful network called the Global Information Grid (GIG) that will be much more powerful than what they have today. NetCentric warfare really is centered around the GIG and is a way for military operators to seemlessly share operational data in ways that make what you see on the Internet look like two kids with tin cans and a piece of string.
Part of the problem with such massive networks is finding information and getting it out to the people who need it. Some good ideas from the Internet will be adapted, such as a Google-style search capability and the equivalent of blogging.
There are blogs already on SIPRNET
Yes, there are SIPRNET blogs. I was just pointing out that it seems Steven has no idea what Net-Centric Operations is all about. Blogs are just an informal method of communications but they aren’t the driving factor behind NCO. Steven seems to think it’s about the White House sending emails or something equally silly.
