The idea that al Qaeda might have been operating in Iraq before Operation Iraqi Freedom wasn’t one of the reasons I supported the war. A search through the archives will bear that out.
That said, the al Qaeda/Iraq connection is looking strong than ever. Reading the so-called “Pentagon Papers” just published on the web by the Army, Jason Smith finds this little tidbit:
In fact, if you look at page 5 of that document, you’ll see a familiar photo… that of al-Qaida in Iraq terror leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Now remember, this document is dated before the war began.
Question is, why isn’t anyone in the White House screaming this stuff from the rooftops?

This administration is by far, probably the worst in terms of PR. I think Bush has the attitude that he is going to do what he feels is best for the country which is all fine and good. But trying to get the unwashed masses on board with his plan doesn’t seem to be a top priority.
Then again, even if we dug up an underground bunker with 100 tons of nerve agent and a nuke, it wouldn’t make a hill of difference to the Democratic base anyway. They’d still find something to complain about.
But trying to get the unwashed masses on board with his plan doesn’t seem to be a top priority.
ITYM “But trying to get the unwashed masses on board with his plan by kissing the MSM’s ass doesn’t seem to be a top priority.”
wait until we’re closer to the November elections. I’d hope they do their “Due Diligence” before shooting their mouthes off like the Dems do.
They cited Zarqawi’s group in Iraq as one of the reason’s they went to war in Iraq, in front of the U.N. no less.
Some details on why they might not be screaming about it here.
A quote from the article:
Military officials insist their case for attacking Zarqawi
Because they have screwed things up so bad that even pictures of Osama sitting on Saddam’s lap couldn’t redeem this war, except in the eyes of true believers.
Yes, I agree they should be pointing out that al Zarqawi was present in Iraq before the war started. However, the other big, big point that should be made is this:
Is Iraq/America/the world better off with Saddam Hussein out of power or would we be better off with Saddam Hussein still in power?
It’s that simple.
would we be better off with Saddam Hussein still in power?
Some would answer “yes” to that question:

For those that don’t want to click thru, it’s an editorial cartoon showing what is presumably a US general saying the following to Saddam in his cell:
“We need someone who can get Iraq under control, interested?”
Mind boggling.
When given the choice between disorder and injustice, it’s always interesting to see who comes down on the side of injustice. It’s obvious which side the “at least Iraq was orderly under Saddam” crowd is on.
I seem to remember a Star Trek episode where Spock is commenting that Hitler was brilliant in his logic and organization. Or something like that. Anyone remember that episode?
Anyway, Hitler’s Germany may have been a bastion of organization and order, but I’m thinking that a million or so Jewish people liked it a lot better after he left.
Also, remember Stephen King’s The Stand, in which Randall Flag (basically the devil incarnate) is the one who wins over the techies and the engineers. He insists on order and a city with no drugs, pollution, etc. But he was purely evil, whereas Mother Abigail (the Christian leader) was not really interested in setting laws, reestablishing a governing council, etc.
I think that many people, if given a choice, would prefer what is easier for them. It can be easier to live an orderly existence, even when oppressed, if the alternative means you must work and work hard for everything you have.
Am I making any sense here?
Anyway, just some thoughts…
It’s hard to get the media to cover a story that’s opposite what they’ve been spouting. Remember the ‘Fonz’ on ‘Happy Days’? He could never say he was wrong about something…. literally.
So it is with the MSM. They’re never “wr.. wr.. wr.. Hey, look! It’s a Natalie Holloway update!”
J.
Perhaps the best angle is for them to remind America that Zarqawi was protected from Saddam by the No Fly Zone.
Now this doesn’t mean that Saddam would have kicked Zarqawi out of Iraq or had him killed without the no fly zones in place.
And what does it say of the mostly autonomous Kurds who were also protected by the no fly zone yet allowed Zarqawi to continue to operate in their area?
“It’s hard to get the media to cover a story that’s opposite what they’ve been spouting…”
Just as they’ve completely putzed the economic news, letting the “sputtering economy” boys own the airwaves. I’m sure 3/4′s of America thinks we’re still in a recession. They are as ham handed, tone-deaf a bunch of rocket scientists as I have ever seen. Just like this little gathering:
“About an hour ago, a release was made in Washington, D.C., announcing the formation of something called the Iraq Study Group, which will consist of James A. Baker and Lee Hamilton, former CIA director Robert Gates, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Clinton advisor Vernon Jordan, Clinton chief of staff Leon Panetta, Clinton Defense Secretary William Perry, Democratic Senator Chuck Robb, retired, Alan Simpson, a Republican, and allegedly, Sandra Day O’Connor is rumored to be about to join this as well. It has been put together under the auspices of the Congressional Institute of Peace, it will be funded by federal dollars.”
…is going to suck all the air out of the room, too.
Pinheads.
I just got off the phone with Ann Coulter and she sez that photo doesnt prove enny-thin “since all rag-heads look alike.”
You have to be careful about adding significance to Zarqawi’s pre-war presence in Iraq.
Remember that “Al Qaeda in Iraq” was a self-proclaimed creation of Zarqawi several months after the end of the conventional war. Yes, he was a left-over Muj from the Soviet-Afghanistan war, and probably had some AQ connections, but team bin Laden/Zawahiri didn’t recognize this off-shoot until months after Zarqawi literally made a name for himself.

An excellent and simply the basic point of that story.
Nevertheless the “We were right after all” slogan will gain ground among people who have a tendency to ignore the little facts that do not conform to their mind frames.
The Administration seems to have the (former) Apple Corp marketing syndrome: “We’ve got the best product and we don’t need to sell it to anybody they’ll just come around to it.”
“Military officials insist their case for attacking Zarqawi
Well, Mr. the left is right , I’m sure you miss Saddam’s bounty for killing jews like most of the left-wing pinheads.
I don’t.
And as you name implies, the loony left and the loony right have jew hating in common with the Islamofascists.
I’m glad Saddam is deposed, and his mass murdering spawn are dead so they can’t gas and rape their enemies.
Go ahead, be nostalgic for mass murdering regimes. Lots of scum missed Stalin and Hitler and Mao too.
