Jackson Diehl, on keeping Bush honest.
Terrific piece, with some very credible suggestions. But I thought Saudi Arabia was a conspicuously absent guest. By funding madrassas that promote Wahabbism and (implicitly) islamofascism, the Saudis are probably the most destructive regime we prop up, but there it really does look like a choice between the backward, corrupt royal family and a bunch of raving loonies. Are there any good options for promoting democracy in that country?
Wanted: Foreign Policy Alternative
As near as I can tell, SA is full of roly-poly sheiks, mall-loitering teens, and Palestinian servants. A more unlikely site for democracy is hard to imagine. The U.S. needs to develop other sources of energy, so we can stop supporting these layabouts who use our money to support anti-American mullahs around the world. When you think about it, wouldn’t SA make a good homeland for the Kurds?
