I’m shocked, shocked:
Documents from Saddam Hussein’s oil ministry reveal he used oil to bribe top French officials into opposing the imminent U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
The oil ministry papers, described by the independent Baghdad newspaper al-Mada, are apparently authentic and will become the basis of an official investigation by the new Iraqi Governing Council, the Independent reported Wednesday.
“I think the list is true,” Naseer Chaderji, a governing council member, said. “I will demand an investigation. These people must be prosecuted.”
Such evidence would undermine the French position before the war when President Jacques Chirac sought to couch his opposition to the invasion on a moral high ground.
“Moral ground” is French for “petrodollars.”

This just proves it’s easier to fool the American Left than it is to fool an Iraqi.
I doubt very much that anybody was really fooled, Dave. Chriac was their ‘le fils d’une chienne’. No more complicated than that…
Will:
“Theirs” as in the Left’s? Or “Theirs” as in the Iraqis?
I guess it works in both cases, but I had the Left particularly in mind…
Oh brother!!!! The story is buried on MSNBC . They kind of downplay specific allegations against just one group but it also lists a *bunch* of countries and folks who received free oil. It makes Saddam out to be your everyday oil “pusher.” Like it was some kind of drug to these folks.
::: there goes that idea for my European vacation :::
Man, the spin on that UPI story is nasty! Very snarky towards the French, and certainly comes off as biased against them. They probably deserve it, and I feel that the accusations are probably true. I’m just surprised to see that particular kind of bias in a wire story. (As opposed to the anti-American, anti-Israeli, anti-Right bias.)
