Have you ever gone to a modern art museum, scratched your head and wondered “what the hell is this?”
You are not alone.
A cleaning crew in Rome, Italy, took it one step further and threw a modern art installation into the garbage because they thought it was trash. The New York Post describes the exhibit as “empty champagne bottles and spent party poppers.” Clearly art, like Bernini and Davinci.
Maybe you’re just stupid like the cleaning crew and didn’t realize the artist created the installation for you to ponder the “consumerism, financial speculation, mass media and parties of the 1980s.”
Here’s a picture of the installation:
“After realizing the mistake, staff at the Museion Bozen-Bolzano in the northern Alto Adige region hastily salvaged the materials from rubbish sacks and recreated the artwork.” I bet no one was the wiser.
There is a bright side. Museum director Letizia Ragaglia said in a statement, “It has sparked a great debate. … It all goes to show how contemporary art is capable of arousing great interest, or even annoying people. We believe it is essential to keep this dialogue open.”
The creators of the installment were not amused. “What happened was bad. It cannot be possible for an installation to end up in the rubbish bin.” Apparently it isn’t only possible, it’s actual.
If you want to go experience the installation, it will be open to the public until November 22.
