Many news outlets reported earlier today that House Speaker John Boehner had canceled his press conference announcing his resignation, but it went on as planned. In fact, the speaker arrived cheerfully singing the Disney tune “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” which he also sang while exiting a press conference in February of 2014 when he announced a vote on an increase of the debt ceiling.
Boehner told reporters he made his final decision this morning after getting his coffee at Starbucks like he does every day. The famously emotional Boehner choked up while recalling a private moment he shared yesterday with Pope Francis.
Via Fox News Insider:
Boehner said he just felt that “today is the day,” and recalled a private moment he shared yesterday with Pope Francis.
“The pope grabbed my left arm and said some very kind words to me about my commitment to kids and education. He puts his arm around me and pulls me to him and says, ‘please pray for me.’ Well, who am I to pray for the pope? But I did,” said Boehner.
He also said he doesn’t doubt that he could have retained his spot as Speaker, but added that it is not healthy for “the institution” to have the battle.
He exited singing one more rendition of “Zip-a-De-Doo-Dah.”
