The New York Times did an analysis of opponents of the nuclear deal today, taking a highlighter to the Jews even though more Jewish members than not back the president.
“Though more Jewish members of Congress support the deal than oppose it, the Democrats against the deal are more likely to be Jewish or represent Jewish constituencies,” the brief article states.
Their list of House members similarly highlights the Jews — and places Jewish opponents Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) and Lois Frankel (D-N.Y.) at the top of the list.
Twitter users accused the NYT of stoking dual-loyalty accusations with their yellow highlighter.
UPDATE 8 p.m. EST: The NYT quietly removed the “Jewish” column without issuing a correction.
NYT Deputy Washington Editor Jonathan Weisman has taken responsibility for the graphic:
@Yair_Rosenberg @MtthwRose As I said, I take responsibility for graphic & don’t apologize. We kept data, just put it into intro. I’m Jewish

@mr_markjacobs @LoriLMarcus @Sulliview Mark, did you mean yellow because @NYTimes implies Jewish duplicity or color of those Nazi ID stars?

— righteous axe (@righteousaxe) September 10, 2015

@nytimes Was there not one editor who thought it a tad creepy to specifically ID all Jews in congress who are against the #IranDeal ?
