The Veterans Administration health care scandal is now mainstream news. For good discussions of how corruption within the government-run health system has harmed American veterans (and potentially led to scores of patient deaths), see these summaries by David Catron, Michael Tanner, and Mark Tapscott.

Yet this has not fazed advocates of a government “single-payer” system. According to Kaiser Health News, the VA health scandal isn’t relevant to their cause because “the VA system is fully government-run, and not the same as single-payer, where doctors and hospitals would remain private, with payment from the government.”

But this is a distinction without a difference.

The federal government sets the budget for the VA, determines which doctors can work for them, and ultimately controls what care patients may receive. Except for cosmetic differences, the same applies to any single-payer system. Even if doctors remain nominally private under single-payer, he who pays the piper calls the tune.

If American veterans can’t trust the federal government with their medical care, why should the rest of us?

"According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, as of July 30, 2010, there were 153 VA hospitals, 773 outpatient centers, and 260 Vet Centers (counseling) in the US." As a vet I go on a regular basis to a VAMC and have been taken care of medically in a military way, in and out and the medical procedures done correctly. Seems so many aren't like this one I feel very fortunate. Its one of the reasons we should always have as the Commander in Chief someone thats been there, what 40 deaths from waiting show is incompetency in leadership, the CIC cannot be a inept fool, leadership starts from the top and goes down so that there is accountability. What we have now is a criminal conspiracy, this Democrat Party as now constituted will get us all killed if this continues; it is not the party of a Harry Truman but of a Saul Alinsky Communist.

So if a single payer healthcare system wouldn't be anything like the VA, or medicade, pray tell lib what would it look like?
How would the same inept, corrupt system that mismanages them now do it differently?

An Ass masquerading as a President once found a Doctor’s white lab coat which had been left out in the sun to dry. He put it on and spoke to his countrymen. All bowed, both men and women, and he was a proud Ass that day. In his delight he lifted up his voice and brayed treatments and prescriptions and timetables and qualifications randomly and incoherently and unleashed mindless bureaucrat zombies upon the land to look for trouble, find it everywhere, diagnose everything incorrectly and then in a very grouchy and slow manner misapply all the wrong remedies, and then everyone knew him for the Ass he really was.

Kaiser Health News: "doctors and hospitals would remain private, with payment from the government.” > So, fascism? I hear that's been tried.

Some comments on that KHN article are ignorant and in need of enlightenment, but I can't figure out how to add a comment :\ They must have a web-based liberty detector.

Just ask yourself how much in the VA budget and budget increases went to doctors and treatment, rather than to bureaucrats and not medical care services.

And don't even start on the bonuses that have been reported for keeping treatment costs to certain levels. Want to talk death panels, by unknown people looking to pad their checking account.

Funny how people that seem to hate business where people get paid for success, go into government, and want extra compensation for their failures.

“...the VA system is fully government-run, and not the same as single-payer, where doctors and hospitals would remain private, with payment from the government.”

6000 federal employees at CMS are not sitting there simply writing reimbursement checks to private doctors and hospitals - they are cranking out rules and regs that must be interpreted and obeyed.

Obama says this creates good-paying private sector jobs...I think many are on par with broken window repair.

So, according to Kaiser, the VA system is functionally equivalent to the NHS in the UK? Okay. Noted.

Dr. Hsieh please answer a question for me that to this day I'm still grappling with, during the ramp up to the passing of this pathetic law and through all of the subsequent collateral damage, doctors as a group have been no where to be found. With so much at stake, physicians have not had a cogent voice through this whole travesty, which I find perplexing?

Thee have been several forms of socialized medicine in the US and legislators would have been wise to check out how well they were doing PRIOR TO PASSING Obamacare. Since the "affordable health care act" was hastily passed in the middle of the night, I doubt any checking was done. and we have yet to experience the woes we will incur.
