How does one critique a speech like tonight’s? It’s like trying to find rational structure in cotton candy. Poke it too much and it’ll just get all over you and make a big mess. Obama is like an actor stepping into a role that is larger than himself  – a Brendan Fraser trying to take on a John Wayne role. He looks the part, he sounds the part, but the gravitas just isn’t there.

President Barack Obama spent more than an hour sweeping between a laundry list of proposals, anecdotes to hide his failures, and what can only be called lies about the state of the union. He took credit for an energy boom that he not only had nothing to do with, but that he has actively tried to stop. He touted Middle East policies that will end with an Iranian nuclear weapon and radical Islamists in control of at least one other state in the region, if not several. Obama never mentioned Pastor Saeed Abedini, the American who is imprisoned in Iran. He pushed for minimum wage hikes that won’t create jobs and may price some jobs off into robotic replacements, and which would only impact about 4% of the American work force. Meanwhile, the labor participation rate in Obama’s economy is still at a historic low. His record on jobs is awful.

Obama stood before a joint session of Congress and told them that he was done with them. He told them that he intended to sideline them whenever he can. And the Democrats elected to that body, who are supposed to defend its constitutional responsibilities and powers, cheered. It was a ghastly sight, unworthy of our nation’s station as the world’s oldest functioning republic.

The president may have done all Republicans a favor when he offered up an applause line that got all the Democrats to spring to their feet and loudly cheer Obamacare. Most of America hates that policy. That image of Democrats cheering for that policy is sure to feature in Republican attack ads this fall, and to great effect.

I'm not disappointed by what Obama said. In fact, I expected as much.
I am, however, disappointed by the complicity of the other two branches of government in the deracination of the once-proud United States from the U.S. Constitution.

Baghdad Barry.

Wind him up and watch him turn in circles and jab his finger for an hour.

The Emperor Franz-Josef ruled both Austria and Hungary, but couldn't understand any Hungarian, although he could just about pronounce the words. One day, on a visit to Budapest, he was due to address the Hungarian Parliament and to open a soup-kitchen, but he got the speeches mixed up. Naturally, the attendant Hungarians felt obliged to applaud him, anyway.

I think you have a Franz-Josef in the White House. He can't deliver a coherent sentence, even in English, unless it's put in front of him on a teleprompter, and I'm quite sure that, if he had one speech loaded on to his right prompter and a completely different one on the left prompter, he'd read both, with all the same mannerisms, without noticing.

As Emperor, with (as he saw it) a divine right to rule, Franz-Josef wasn't exactly too bothered about constitutional niceties, either.

Oh - and he reigned for sixty-eight years.

telling congress that he finds you irrelevant and looks to bypass your constitutional role, and that gets applause, says all that one needs to know about the sell out of congress and the failure of those to understand that they took an oath to uphold the constitution not the party.

The next three years may be a long hard slog for those of us who disagree with Obama, but take heart. The next nine months is going to be a complete disaster for those who agree with Obama.

So Mussolini for Morons fed the country chicken sh*t and told us it was chicken salad. That's about what I expected.

Oh come now. Look at it in the bright side. Barack Obama has set a wonderful precedent for some future Conservative president who - by the stroke of his pen - will now be able to dismantle and neuter evil bureaucracies such as EPA, NLRB, IRS. Imagine: the ability to undo two hundred years of evil leftist legislation with the stroke of a pen.

Actually, wasn't Reagan accused of doing this? I seem to remember the Left (or the press, same thing) attacking him for not funding things Congress appropriated.

Precedent never matters. The press decides what's important, and only Republicans are allowed to have scandals.

Try to imagine the reaction from the media and the Dems if GWB had said he would "go around congress to force HIS agenda." Heads would have exploded. Calls for impeachment would be echoing through the capital this morning. With Obama? Perfectly ok. Business as usual.

Obama's speech illustrates item #2 in the criteria our next president must meet to get my vote. Item #1 is, of course, kill Obamacare. Item #2 would be to enter office issuing literally hundreds of executive orders abrogating Obama's own executives orders and passing those issues along to Congress.

The first might be to eliminate the one that hid his background from an unsuspecting public

Sad but true. In order to nullify Obama's unconstitutional behavior and overreach, the next president, if Republican will HAVE to resort to the same tactics. Then the death spiral will continue, back and forth, drip, drip, drip.

Last night’s screech was vintage O trying to get his mojo back. But there’s a chance he actually believes his own propaganda.

This guy could be headed for impeachment and removal from office.

President Obama did a great imitation of Fidel Castro and his policies. The RNC sends out "Little Bo Peep" to feed us Pablum in response. That was amateur hour at best.

Increase and legalize immigrants, put the poor on Medicaid, lengthen U/C benefits, raise minimum wage, force companies to provide health care, increase BPT benefits and that will produce more jobs for Americans is illogical.
Will someone please step up and explain why women earn 77% of what men earn. If you are referring to the same job that is impossible and will cost the employer millions in lawsuits and it has been illegal for years. It means: If you attend 4 years of college and take education courses as a woman you make 77% of what a man does who took 4 years of engineering courses. Teaching and Engineering are not equal work (unless you teach at Harvard 3 hours a week and make $320,000 like Liawatha).
