A&E TV’s decision to suspend Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty is still lighting up social media. The network probably had some idea that any decision impacting its most popular show would generate a backlash, but probably underestimated just how large the reaction would be. Whether it had any idea of just how important a battle it was opening is something only the network execs really know. If they’re the typical broadcast execs, they probably have very little contact with the kind of people who watch Duck Dynasty, and have no idea why the show is as popular as it is.

Wittingly or not, A&E has chosen a side in the culture wars. The network said as much in its statement last night, when it said that it strongly stands with the LGBT community, against a man whose offense was quoting the New Testament. That’s a significant statement, one that Christians should not ignore.

Give Them an Inch, and They’ll Take a Mile

Many on the right have seen the trajectory of the gay rights movement and concluded that it’s wise to surrender on the marriage question to be “on the right side of history.” The lesson of Phil Robertson suggests that once the marriage battle is won, groups like the Human Rights Campaign and GLAAD will simply move on to a new battlefield. They will not stop. They do not exist to stop. They exist to keep on pushing. The next battlefield may well be codifying the idea they expressed last night, that quoting mainstream Christian beliefs that have been in place for a couple thousand years amounts to hate speech that should be banned.

But discrimination against Christians is perfectly ok.

Unless GLAAD has a theological division, it’s in no place to dictate Christian values. But that won’t stop it from trying. The end game for GLAAD and its allies is among the most intolerant goals possible: They want to drive all Christians and Christian values and ideas from the public square in America. They want to persecute and oppress. They admitted as much when they supported Robertson’s suspension for saying something that they didn’t like.

This is exactly what Angelo Codevilla (google him if you haven't read his essays, PLEASE) is talking about when he talks about the Ruling Class vs the Country Class. The ruling class thought they had all this kind of "backward" thinking stamped out. This backlash is the Country Class, saying "We may not have the media, government, and academe under our control, but we still carry on, living our lives according to OUR values. You will not change us." The Ruling Class is just shocked and outraged everytime they come across some "yokel" from the Country Class who isn't too intimidated to speak his mind. May we all join Phil, and stop being afraid to say what we think.....

I think the gay agenda is to ultimately achieve the same sort of protected species status as black Americans currently have -- not only no criticism (or even comment) *ever* allowed, but preferential (affirmative) treatment whenever possible. You're absolutely right about giving an inch and taking a mile -- this Duck Dynasty kerfuffle is just a signpost along the road to achieving that elite protected status.

Hey PJM viewers. We have a choice. I will not watch any A&E programs and will boycott their sponsors too until this company apologizes to Phil. As to who has the leverage, A&E just committed financial suicide. Does Phil and his family need this group of A holes? No he does not is the answer. Believe me he can take this program or leave it. In any event I say NO to A&E and will stick to my pledge.

I gave my reasons here for the longevity of this story: it is about primitivism and a return to patriarchal social relations in the family and elsewhere: See http://clarespark.com/2013/12/22/what-is-missing-in-the-duck-dynasty-flap/.

I applaud Phil Robertson's honesty, and I don't think he was crude when he expressed his astonishment that a man would prefer another man's anus over a woman's vagina. He was merely speaking his mind.

I have a gay son and I love him dearly, but it won't change my core beliefs in any way. I will never support gay marriage, and it's very likely that whenever I do meet my son's partner I will be uncomfortable. That's just the way it is.

As far as GLAAD's campaign to have Mr. Robertson removed from A&E, given the backlash they've experienced I think they realize that they've reached the point where their demands have gone too far. You can't make true believers abandon God.

I've never seen Duck Dynasty, but it sure is popular. That tells us that there's pent up demand for traditional values out there.

But the most amazing Duck Dynasty fact of all is that Phil Robertson was the starting QB on the Louisiana Tech football team. That is, until future NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw showed up as a freshmen. A couple of weeks ago Bradshaw went down and visited Robertson to record a clip for Terry's pre-game show. The two hadn't seen one another in decades, and Bradshaw had no idea that Phil Robertson had become a reality TV celeb. Robertson noted during the clip that when he saw Bradshaw's talent and work ethic, he decided to quit the team and to concentrate on his two real fields of study and LTU: beer drinking and chasing women.

Now those are traditional values. Bradshaw couldn't stop laughing.

I'm watched the show once...

A&E is now arguably in breach of contract for "firing" Phil. And the DD has vowed now not to go on the air without Phil.

Legal wrangling will likely ensue. And out of that, I expect that DD moves to another channel within a few months. And that they're paid more. (And more free publicity here then anyone could ever want! Not all good, but lots of people distrust the media and will side with DD.) And that their ratings go up. (Assuming that the new channel is accessible to a similar # of homes compared to A&E.)

Phil was crude and crass here, but his sins are overstated.

Let us note here that when Hillary left them to die, the 35 at the Benghazi facility weren't her friends. And, except for the two ex-SEALS disobeying direct orders, all 35 would've been murdered. In a way, the two ex-SEALS sacrificed there lives so Hill could be our next president.

For the record, you don't have to be a Christian (or any kind of believer) to be disturbed by the treatment of Robertson. He can afford to lose his A&E gig, but this kind of bullying can be a real threat to non-celebrities who can't afford to lose their jobs over some incautious bit of honesty on Facebook or Twitter. The PC mob is like any other, always looking for another victim.

Can't boycott A&E, unfortunately, as I don't get it to begin with, so I'll just have to look for an online petition that's actually likely to get their attention.

You surmise:

"Cognitive dissonance is the ability to hold contradictory ideas as valid even though they cancel each other out."

Not really. It arose from the Korean War. The cognitive dissonance hypothesis arose when the psychiatric community was trying to figure out why American soldiers apparently went over to the enemy side after having been 'brainwashed' by the North Korean Army. Refer to the writings of R. Schein for the data analysis.

It hypothesizes that if you can get someone to publicly espouse a position, even though it is diametrically opposed to their personal beliefs, that they will personally adopt that position to negate the dissonance. It is the essence of mind control.

And it works even under duress. If you can be forced to publicly apologize for an act of your own, even if you believe in the act, your own personal opinion will drift toward the apologic position.

That's why you were right to bring this up, and that is why what is being done to Phil is so very dangerous.

The Left has two HOLY COWS the first is HOMOSEXUALITY and the second is Black THUGS. They are quite prepared to call MILLIONS of Americans (OVER 7% of the population) who have lost their Health Care Insurance because of OBOZOcare INSIGNIFICANT and to treat them and CHRISTIANS (60%)with the utmost contempt , but don't you dare insult a HOMO (1.4%) or their perverted lifestyle or a Black THUG (2%) or their uncivilized lifestyle because if you do the whole Left wing destruction machine will descend on you.

Phil WASN'T 'VILE and EXTREME or foul mouthed, except in the pathetic little minds of HOMOS and the LEFT , 'vagina' and 'anus' are perfectly valid words and his views on HOMOS are perfectly in line with the Catholic Churches and ALL MUSLIMS and MOST thinking peoples views on the perversion of HOMOSEXUALITY .

This is just one more examples of liberals showing us what they are really all about.

Since they are superior beings it is their belief that they have not only the right but the obligation to make rules for other inferior beings; the rest of us.

There is no need ever to question or even examine their beliefs.

If reason is to survive we must fight back.
