Here Comes Another Obama 'Pivot to Jobs'

My fellow Americans, we’re very lucky. The man who has been president going on five years now believes that Washington isn’t paying sufficient attention to the economy. So he’s going to give a bunch of speeches about it! Isn’t it always nice to hear about the economy from a man whose only connection with one is to wreck it?

The first of the series of speeches is set to come Wednesday at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., where Obama delivered an economic speech shortly after he was elected a U.S. senator in 2005. He’ll then travel to the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., to deliver remarks later that day.

In a blog post that was emailed out to those subscribed to the White House listserv, White House senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer billed it as a speech “you’re going to want to watch.”

“The President thinks Washington has largely taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country,” Pfeiffer said.

“Instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles, and trump up phony scandals. And in a couple of months, we will face some more critical budget deadlines that require Congressional action, not showdowns that only serve to harm families and businesses — and the President wants to talk about the issues that should be at the core of that debate.”

The “refight old battles” line is a slap at Republicans who have tried in vain to repeal the job-killer known as Obamacare. He started road testing that line last week when he surrounded himself with human props and gave a speech designed to knock the IRS hearing off newscasts and out of most punditry. These news speeches, then, will be about protecting the ground Obama has gained, and about distracting away from the Democrats’ internal fault line on that law and from the Obama scandals.

That ground does need protecting. Thirty-five Democrats voted with the Republicans to delay the Obamacare employer mandate last week. Some of those then turned around and voted with the rest of the Democrats against delaying the individual mandate, putting the Democrats on the record valuing corporations above people. They are the party that supports billion dollar corporation Planned Parenthood in lockstep, though, which takes valuing corporations over people to an almost absurdly comedic level.

This latest “pivot to jobs” will further a great lie, which is that the Democrats’ vision of immigration reform will help jump start the economy. What it’s actually likely to do if it passes is legalize millions of workers at the lower levels of our economy, who will compete with the Americans and legal immigrants who are already here, while further straining government services.
