So, this happened while we were all focused on the election of the new pope.

The Obama administration is drawing up plans to give all U.S. spy agencies full access to a massive database that contains financial data on American citizens and others who bank in the country, according to a Treasury Department document seen by Reuters.

Financial institutions that operate in the United States are required by law to file reports of “suspicious customer activity,” such as large money transfers or unusually structured bank accounts, to Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

The Federal Bureau of Investigation already has full access to the database. However, intelligence agencies, such as the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, currently have to make case-by-case requests for information to FinCEN.

The Treasury plan would give spy agencies the ability to analyze more raw financial data than they have ever had before, helping them look for patterns that could reveal attack plots or criminal schemes.

The planning document, dated March 4, shows that the proposal is still in its early stages of development, and it is not known when implementation might begin.

More at the link.

This would be less of a worry if the current administration hadn’t signaled who it thinks may be among the terrorists — returning veterans, pro-life activists, and so forth. But since it did signal that, this is a big worry.

This isn't going to make me popular here, but I submit that had George W. Bush been able to win a third and fourth term as President, his administration would have proposed and implemented very much the same things as Obama has. Including this. W would have given us drones spying on and killing American citizens without due process as well.

Bush's first term gave us the original Patriot Act, remember? And other goodies including the FBI looking at the books you check out at the library? What's the difference? With W and Obama I see two peas in a pod.

This is why we still need cash. Cash is one of the last vestiges of freedom we have left since it can't be easily tracked. Once they take that away, we won't have any freedom left.

Warrantless wiretaps! We don't need no warrantless wiretaps! We'll just give our agencies authorization to view private records!

And people support expanding background checks to private gun purchases.

They said if I voted Republican, we'd have an Orwellian state spying on all Americans. And they were right! #23,401,212

Or, we can play, "What if a Republican did this?"
