The GOP has been negotiating as if they hadn’t just suffered a huge electoral defeat, indeed as if they hadn’t just suffered a *stunning* rebuke by the american people. Instead they’re digging their heels in further and doubling down on the “party of no” strategy.
I have to feel bad for Boehner, who clearly sees that that strategy is a loser, but who is impotent to steer his rabid party away from the coming electoral cliff.

..with a man who never keeps promises, says one thing and does the opposite, makes “cast in stone” statements he repudiates five seconds later, tells different groups diametrically-opposed versions of a single situation on the same day (each one tailored to that group’s dogmas), and believes the ultimate argument in any debate is “I Won”.
You cannot “debate” with a congenital liar and con man. Nor can you reach a “compromise” with someone who defines that word as “I get everything I demanded up front, and it’s your job to give it to me and STFU.”
It’s especially impossible when every “pledge” he makes has a built-in expiration date. Usually five seconds after he finishes blathering.
The problem is that this con artist is motivated less by any perceivable, reasonable goal, than by a desire to (a) “remake” this country into something entirely different, and (b) get “revenge” on this country’s peoples for a laundry list of sins, most of them imaginary. He is aided and abetted by hand-picked lackeys from academia, the media, and radical politics who share his distorted worldview and his bizarre dreams of creating a Brave New World.
Not to mention a news media which worships hm and will blame all of the inevitable failures of his grand delusions on everybody who dared to even suggest he might be slightly wrong about anything.
This is why it is pointless to “negotiate” with this President. He is determined to send America to Hell in a handbasket, in the belief that he can build Utopia on the ruins thereof.
We probably can’t avoid the handbasket from here on in, but he can’t build Utopia either. All we can do is give the fool what he demands, and when it crashes, maybe people who have had stars in their eyes while contemplating him for the last four years will finally realize that they are even bigger fools than he.

While Boehner may not be the right man for the job, to give him *some* credit, all he has to fight with, politically, is a wet noodle.
Conservatives seem to expect him, like a magician, to summon the sun, the moon and the stars out of absolutely nothing. Hell, even in real majik, you don’t get something with nothing. The only thing conservatives have in D.C. is the House. The left-wingers own or control the rest.
Replace Boehner and you’ll get pretty much the results you’re getting now. Whoever replaces him? Well, they’ll be all but powerless to change anything or to prevent the left from doing anything they really want to do…which is what conservatives are complaining about, now. So, complain about Boehner, especially his blacklist (enuff reason to dump him, right there), but don’t complain when his replacement gets the same results you’re getting now, which is squat.
In short, Boehner’s not the problem. The left holding all of the federal power in thenation is your problem. Getting rid of Boehner, however good your reasons, won’t change that fact.

To really “go Galt” would mean refusing to pay one’s taxes, thereby putting a chokehold on the giant trough at which the freeloaders continually feed; this would not work unless enough people engaged in this. Unfortunately, not enough people could be persuaded to cross that line.
10 years ago, hell, even 4 years ago, I wouldv’e agreed; today, I’m not so sure that there isn’t enough support in at least the red states for such a move. I know that most, if not all, of the blue states are probably hopeless, we’d be better off cutting them loose.

After Speaker Boehner’s “Plan B”debacle, the House closed the session and left town. Obama is supposed to do what? Everything is in Boehner’s lap and he cannot control the House over which he has control. Nothing will happen as long as the Republican House is in the thrall of Grover and the Tea Party. Not a bad thing, but certainly not a recipe for getting things done. We’ll go over the cliff and Republicans will get the blame, rightly or wrongly. We’ve been played.
Of course if Boehner had passed plan B, the Repubs would have been praised and loved? Not. I saw a headline on Yahoo news which stated that plan B was a Republican tax hike bill. Im sure a similar tactic would have been taken by Obummer and the state controlled media.
If you are going to get blamed no matter what and if facts don’t matter, then its best to stick by your principles.
Passing B would have allowed the republicans to say “hey we tried, we passed a bill that was a reasonable compromise and the dems killed it. So blame them for the cliff.”
Instead now the dems can accurately say that the GOP is in chaos, unable to even support their own leadership’s bills. Plus, and this is *HUGE*, they can accurately show that the right refused to raise taxes on the top .1% but would rather hurt everyone because they are completely beholden to a small group of mega-wealthy investors and a senseless anti-tax position which is impossible to square with their sudden concern about the deficit/debt. There’s no defense for the GOP which has now blatantly confirmed every caricature of themselves.

Alternatively if there is no bill then we go over the cliff, the republicans get most of the blame for the matter and the president can then craft his own set of tax cuts that do exactly what he wants, and he gets to cut defense spending without expending any political capital.

I suppose that it is possible, that after taking a lot of abuse and looking impotent, that Boehner, in the long run, could end up looking like the statesman here. Don’t ask me exactly how it will happen, but he comes across as a guy who is trying. Obviously, he needs to be able to back to his Tea Partiers and Groverites and be more convincing about why the bill they just did not pass would be better than going off the fiscal cliff. Boehner has moved toward the center, which is the logical thing to do, but he can’t yet get his colleagues to move with him. Anyway, it is encouraging how a number of PJMers see this.
On the other hand, as long as jumping off the fiscal cliff does not send us into a Depression, (a big if) isn’t it the most credible way of shrinking the deficits out there?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but why is Obama going to Hawaii for Christmas? He doesn’t live in Hawaii, he doesn’t have a house in Hawaii, and Hawaii isn’t exactly a hop, skip, and a jump away from Washington. In fact, I think Obama is the first president that doesn’t actually go HOME for Christmas.
After all, their home is in Chicago, NOT Hawaii. I guess this should say something to the people who live in Chicago that Obama would rather be anywhere else BUT Chicago during the holidays. Either that, or even Obama is scared of the crime rate in Chicago and is staying away from the place.
If I were living in Chicago, I’d be a little angry that the president is finding every excuse in the book NOT to go home again. So to the people in Illinois, I guess it stinks being used as a stepping stone by an overly ambitious and hypocritical (some would say lying, but that’s another matter) politician just to make his way to the White House.
