The Obama government has now officially become more welcoming to an amorphous rebellion in a far-off country than it is to Republicans in Michigan and Washington.
President Barack Obama says the U.S. now recognizes Syria’s main opposition group as the “legitimate representative” of the country’s people.
Obama says the Syrian Opposition Council is now “inclusive enough” to be granted greater legitimacy in the international community. The president says that level of recognition comes with responsibility, including making sure the group organizes itself effectively and is committed to a political transition that respects the rights of women and minorities.

– dispense hugs there, as he will in Portlandia.
Oh, for pete’s sake. Lessons not learned: Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya. Even I have learned that these rebels have not been found to be the moral equivalent to our Founding Fathers. No angels, islamic jihadis. I thought the President was supposed to be so very smart. … Although, it is the definition, not of lack of smarts, but the definition of INSANITY to take the same action over and over but expect different results. Yes, I had always expected that worldwide adoration would addle anyone’s brain after some time. Can’t he just do what he used to advise President Bush and give Syria a good leaving alone. From a long distance away.
Also, just to vent : how in the heck can anyone in this administration not be hung for allowing our and /or Libyan heavy weaponry into the hands of Syrian opposition jihadis? One way or another some bastard will use the weaponry on OUR BOYS, dammit. Is no one in this administration to be held to account?
I agree Jaynie. The west should stay out of this conflict. Our culture is too different from the MidEast culture. I am just as appalled by these violent Syrian ( ? ) rebels as of the government forces. Correction, more appalled. At least Assad keeps the islamists in check and protects the Christians. If these thugs grab power Syria will be another unpredictable islamist country in our neighbourhood. Again, your President backs the wrong man.
So, we spent 11 years fighting Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups and now we recognize a “rebel” group which includes Al Qaeda affiliates who have openly threatened to come after US interests once Syria is theirs?
Well, that’s just one of the failings of Democracy and why our allies have been so leery of trusting us. It’s just a parade of idiots (with a rare statesman sneaking in now and then) and usually the switch is polar opposites in worldview. Bush wanted to kill terrorists, Obama invites them to the White House for a love in.
Kind of makes me wish I was in the military or intelligence services so I would resign in disgust.
Let me add that it is estimated that 90% plus of the people fighting in Syria are foreigners. How exactly is that “representative of the people of Syria?” Moron.
