The ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee, crediting climate change for the disaster caused by Hurricane Sandy, noted that a chunk of ice broke off Greenland big enough “for all of the Republican deniers of climate change.”
“I don’t think there’s any question that this is related to climate change,” Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) said of the storm. “The oceans off of the Northeast coast are at historic highs in terms of temperature. So that’s additional heat that’s going into the system. That leads to actually higher seas, and that leads ultimately to the much greater harm, which can be done in New Jersey, and Connecticut, and New York City. So, there’s no question it’s related, and it’s intensifying.”
Markey noted that an iceberg twice the size of Manhattan that broke off Greenland earlier this year could be called “Denier Island” — “because there would be enough room on it for all of the Republican deniers of climate change.”
“This is intensifying and — and we just basically have to change course or else what we’re going to see — what we’re seeing here is going to be repeated over, and over, and over again. And this is $50 billion perhaps in damages,” he continued. “That’s an extreme weather tax that is going to have to be paid, rather than trying to avoid the worst consequences, which would be a much better pathway.”
Markey charged that while Americans are concerned about Mother Nature, Mitt Romney is “concerned about the Koch brothers.”
“There are no emergency rooms for planets,” he said. “We either engage in preventative care here and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that go up into the atmosphere, or we are going to see ever greater intensifying, catastrophic events in our country, and causing tremendous damage to the American people.”

Dopey is as dopey does. Don’t confuse this guy Markey with the facts. Southern hemisphere icepack is growing more than the northern is shrinking. You have to be delusional to believe the false computer models and outright fabrications of global temperature data. We are in a long term period of global cooling Markey, FYI.
Sen. Markey should do his homework and not depend on the fraudsters/alarmists. Is the earth getting warmer: definitely, but then it’s been doing that since the 1700s, and it was warmer than now prior to the 1500s. Is the cause of the warming anything human beings have done: almost certainly not. Indeed, for the past 16 or so years, there has been no change in the average temperature of the earth, yet CO2 has been bounding up at a steady clip. More importantly, all the alarmists models have been wrong in their forecasts. Please, no more stupidty from the Democrats/Leftists who would tax us more and impoverish us more. Obamacare is going to do enough harm to last a lifetime.
So what does he propose, we tow it back to Greenland and glue it back in place?
Even if he was right, he does realize that “historic highs” means a tad over 200 years at most, right? And that we’ve been in a position to comprehensively study large areas of the oceans for…a couple of decades?
What an ignorant man. Glaciers have expanded and receded for most of the history of the planet, long before humans ever evolved or thought about firing up a factory. The fact that a Congressman with the authority to draft and vote on related legislation is so blindingly ignorant about the subject should scare people. But, it won’t.
Notice the emphasis on ocean temperatures. The first problem with theories of global warming is that there is no global warming. The Hockey Stick chart has devolved into a curling…. court, whatever they do curling on, which is as level as your foundation. There has been no detectable warming for 17 years now. Google that up, most of the reports will be from foreign press since the #s come from the British Climate Research Unit, the source of much of AGW hysteria.
(D-Mass)…all you need to know.
Dang it. I’m sold. I can’t vote for those dumb Republicans anymore. Global warming is real. We must get rid of all sources of energy except wind and solar. Let’s get down to business blowing up more dams, preventing more pipelines, shoving birth control pills down every last girl’s throat to make sure she doesn’t create anymore of those little Earth destroyers. If she won’t take the pills then will just kill that rotten little fetus inside of her. We can all happily live without heat and electricity forever and ever. No more reproduction. No more progress. Feed the old people to the polar bears! That would be so awesome. Back to the stoneage (newspeak translation: Forward!).
Markey is living proof one can be a successful politician with a room temperature IQ.
The hubris of these clowns is amazing: First, they say they can accurately model a vastly complex system nobody understands, then they say they can fix the same system they can’t even accurately model.
Like they say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I figure Florida residents are pretty happy with Climate Change if that’s what has kept all those apocalyptic hurricanes away from their shores for the past several years.
Markey malarkey … trying to turn one very large point of data into a trend.
Here are two more points: Agnes (1972) and the monster hurricane of 1938. Hurricanes make it into the northeast periodically, and every few decades there’s an especially bad one.
With the cost of Sandy’s damage estimated at $50 billion, the stimulus passed by the Dumocrats could pay for repair of all the damage TWENTY times over. Just a thought!
