- The Incompetent President, by Richard Fernandez. What Andrew Sullivan saw being pummeled in public last week was the real Obama, not the one who is petulantly withholding his genius.

Re: the Los Angeles thing.
I think what we are clearly seeing in America is that the Left is intent on winning their vision for the future, and short of outright bloodshed or the very real threat thereof, will not be stopped, regardless of how elections go, regardless of laws being passed. Too many simply intend to have their way.
Thus, if a democratic Republic is to mean anything, if those of the not-Left are to have any meaningful say at all, at some point the left is going to have to be presented with that one thing that actually will make them pause. Some will press on, but some will not.
It is the percentages of that equation which will determine what comes next. But I do not, long-term, think anything else will work but a blunt presentment of the threat of disunion if certain trends continue.
And I hold no faith in grand compromises. There is, based upon past performance, no compromise I expect the Left to long live up to. Welfare reform lasted a whole decade and a half before just being ignored. Immigration laws have never been truly honored. Why should they be trusted on anything?
Making a deal with the left has the feel of three-card monte. Best answer is to not play.
