The Romney campaign released a statement tonight regarding the attacks on US sovereignty in Cairo, Egypt and Benghazi, Libya. “I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi,” GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said. “It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”
Romney is referring to the statement issued by the US embassy in Cairo, which placed blame for the attacks on US free speech rights for offending Muslims, not the attackers themselves. Later, the embassy tweeted in response to someone who blamed Abu Ghraib on all Americans, saying “We consistently stand up for Muslims around the world and talk abt how Islam is a wonderful religion.”
As of this writing, hours after both attacks, President Obama has issued no formal reaction at all.
