The Republican National Convention will delay its first day of activity to allow public safety resources in Tampa, Fla., to be dedicated to helping with the expected impact of Hurricane Isaac.
“Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th, exact time to follow,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a memo today.
AccuWeather reported this afternoon that “Isaac will close out the weekend pounding South Florida, but will make its final landfall as a powerful Category 2 hurricane along the northern Gulf Coast around Tuesday night.”
As a tropical storm, Isaac lashed Haiti with heavy rain this morning.
“Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area. RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida’s emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain,” Priebus said.
“The Convention staff is working around-the-clock to ensure the delegations housed in storm-impacted areas have alternative housing if needed. The Committee on Arrangements will provide additional information to delegates and alternate delegates who are affected by Isaac by Sunday morning. We will also provide guidance to those delegates and alternate delegates who may encounter travel difficulties due to the storm.”
A revised speaking schedule is expected. Monday’s speakers were to include Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), hosting Gov. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis (Ala.), Texas Senate Republican candidate Ted Cruz, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Puerto Rican first lady Lucé Vela Fortuño, and Ann Romney.
Scott is withdrawing from his convention role to focus on guiding his state through the storm.

They’re just delaying it because they’re afraid bad weather might blow out the burning cross.
Sorry, just had to …
You’re just a miserable piss artist, craving attention. The Democrats are the party od slavery, Jim Crow, and the KKK. Clueless wanker.
Don’t forget the Westboro Baptist Church!
And the GOP is the party who believes that forcing a rape victim to bear the offspring of her rapist is just good family values.
Your slavery comment shows how dumb you are. Once the parties realigned all the old racist Democrats (Dixiecrats) became republicans (think Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, etc.). Ideology is more important than party labels here, but good try. Indeed, If Abraham Lincoln were alive today he’d most certainly be supporting the re-election of President Obama. The TeaOP would probably drive Lincoln out (or primary him) for being too progressive.
Anyway, you people should be fine with Isaac, you handled Katrina so well.
True.
The modern day Democrats are responsible for the creation of the Welfare State
which destroyed the black family structure and put the Blacks back in chains of
economic dependency.
Let’s see – Gov Blanco, Dem; Mayor Nagin, Dem. And you hold the Republicans responsible for Katrina? Wow.
I love it when the Crypto-Fascists drop by to spend a paragraph explaining away all the sins of the Democratic party. And don’t forget the “progressive” wing of your party (Hillary!), which is still “progressive” with a history of racist eugenics theories and sterilization of black people. Those folks never did move anywhere, did they? They were just hoping nobody would notice the Donk’s dirty little secret. And of course, abortion helped keep 20 million black people from being born. No racism to see here – look! rape victims!!!
Your list of Dixiecrats is missing LBJ who fought against Ike’s civil rights legislation. You’re a pitiful fraud.
“Sorry, just had to …”
You’re neither sorry nor did you “have to”. Two lies in 4 words. Quite an accomplishment. But no doubt you’ll get the attention you are seeking.
Yes, you are sorry! Let’s leave it at that.
What will you do after the election, when the Anointed One has his Media Kissed Ass handed to him? Find work? With your attitude and wasted education (the attitude clearly illustrates that you learned nothing from the Buddha), I doubt you will, in the best & most recovered of economies. And as you recent performances here suggest, you do lack … stones.
The Occupy and Anarchist crowds will get their first shower in months.
No doubt there will be some wet strippers.
Ahhh… days off from Convention….
I think he jumped the gun on this ….. I grew up with these storms, they can turn quickly. Looks like Tampa is going to get a pass on Isaac.
I do understand that the logistics of moving people around is an issue, but coasters don’t worry nearly as much about these storms as inlanders do. I predict a good convention.

The GOP really has to think about this “Convention in Florida in peak hurricane season” thing.
Seems like some of the political momentum will be killed.
I don’t have any better ideas, though.
Well, having a hurricane competing with a convention would seem to dilute the attention that the Republicans get from the event. Actually I think this is one of those rare Democratic hurricanes that the Lord sends to discomfit the Republicans.
One must not question the wisdom of our political overlords to have the convention in hurricane season in Florida. And the weather in socialist Seattle sure beats muggy free enterprise Charlotte this time of year. Genius on parade.
It’s just as well they delayed things by a day.
Hopefully the storm will blow out to see so we won’t be hit with stories condemning Romney and his rich republican elitists for partying and having fun while a hurricane ruins the lives of so many poor people.
You know someone at the Daily Kos is working on one right now…
Two thoughts re: this unfortunate development.
1) Wonder when the Reps are going to figure out that conventions in hurricane season in Fla, swing state or no, are a mark of either stubborn stupidity or Charlie Brown-like faith that weather won’t snatch the football away. Once was understandable, but this is a repeating pattern from which they seem to learn nothing.
2) I won’t be watching. I never watch conventions. What’s said about them is far, far more important that what is said in them.
Having said that, I still with the team well for making points with theirs.
HURRICANE ISAAC AND THE GOP: WILL 2012 BE 2008 ALL OVER AGAIN?
Incredibly, now that hurricane Isaac has delayed the start of the RNC Mitt Romney won’t be giving his acceptance speech on the ominous day of August 29: JOHN MCCAIN’S 76TH BIRTHDAY. Incredibly, and this is a sign I believe of a coming Democrat defeat, August 29, 2008 was the day four years ago that John McCain introduced Sarah Palin as his running mate hoping it would energize his flagging election campaign. This is a powerful sign that 2012 won’t be 2008; and that Mitt Romney will weather the ferocious storm of Obama’s campaign of lies and deceit and not suffer a John McCain defeat.

Understand the weather today in Tampa is just fine. How stupid was the RNC to cancel today two days before the start, reacting to hysterical weather reports.
This costs a valuable day, something the Republicans can’t afford. No wonder the Republicans are called “The Stupid Party.”
How to lose an election you should win easily…..
Also agree, what idiots decided to have a convention in Florida this time of year. Have you heard? Ohio is a swing state too.
Tell me the name of beautifull black celebretie with soft face?
