In response to this morning’s tragedy in Aurora, CO, both presidential campaigns have pulled their ads off the air in Colorado. The Romney campaign has pulled all of its ads, canceled Ann Romney’s campaign events and says Gov. Romney’s planned address later today will focus on the shootings. The Obama campaign announced that it is pulling all of its negative ads, which it characterized as “contrast ads,” until further notice.
Speaking in Fort Myers, FL, President Obama said the tragedy “reminded us of all the ways we are united.” He said that the federal government stands ready to all that is necessary to bring the accused shooter to justice. Saying that “we may never understand” the shooter’s motives, we do know what makes life “worth living.”
The president noted that his daughters go to the movies, could have been at that movie, and that he and Michelle will be fortunate enough to hug them tonight. The hand-picked audience of supporters responded to the president’s somber speech with several punctuations of applause, before the president called for a moment of silence.

I’m just hoping to my dear God that Romney doesn’t come tearing out of the gate trying to appear ‘reasonable’ as he suggests we should have a national conversation on greater gun control!
This concern is based upon the fact he did sign gun bans while governor of Massachusetts.
If he does this, he is handing the election to Obummer as he will thoroughly demotivate a lot of voters.
I doubt that this will be a policy speech in any way. It’ll more likely be a unity and compassion for the victims and their families type speech. I thought the president did pretty well with this and was uncharacteristically non-partisan.
I certainly hope this is the case….unfortunately there is a lot of history that leaves me very apprehensive about how they will reference this in the future.
Ultimately you’re probably right. It’s like 9/11. It took a couple of weeks before the partisanship resurfaced.
And in the long run this incident will be used by the anti-gun lobby. Not sure where Romney stands on the second amendment and that issue hasn’t really be central to this election.
But it probably will be in the future.
No matter what he personally believes I hope that Romney wants to be President badly enough that he knows better than to flirt with gun control. With Obama’s “you didn’t build that” speech the base has finally started to actually be a little enthused about Romney, it would be a shame to throw cold water on that.
It is worth noting that Mitt signed more gun control legislation than Obama. Legislation I might add that made unwitting felons of many when the supposed “for life” FIDs were quietly made no longer for life.
Mitt will need to have his feet held to fire to hold a firm line on the 2nd Amendment.
Frankly we are between a rock and a hard place in this election.

Not hearing the remarks, I trust there was a qualifier saying that he was sure the local authorities were fully capable of handling it, but that if they desired assistance, they would get it.
But I doubt it.
R. U. Kidding? If they went to the movies, half the people in the theater would be armed SS.
The dumbth just keeps on rolling.
