For the second time in about a week, an Obama scandal has broken through into the pop culture. First, Solyndra showed up in a question on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Now, Jay Leno has riffed on Fast and Furious and the dismal economy.

In order for that joke to work at all, Leno’s writers had to be sure that Fast and Furious is in the pop culture bloodstream. And let’s put this on the table: Leno is the most mainstream of the late night hosts and takes the fewest risks with his jokes. For him and his staff to repeatedly zing Obama says quite a bit about where they think the culture is.

Leno also compared Obama’s alleged appeal to women to male strippers in the movie Magic Mike:

For a president who has cultivated an image of being cool, riffs from Leno are sure to be a buzzkill.
